“ Quite right , sir . Mr Hyde has a key . We all have orders to obey him . But we see very little of him in this part of the house . He usually comes and goes through the laboratory . ” The lawyer walked home with a heavy heart . “ Poor Harry , ” he thought . “ He was wild when he was young . Some old sin is coming back to punish him . And if Hyde knows about the will , he may not want to wait for his money . I must help Jekyll , if he will only let me . ” III . Dr Jekyll Is Quite at Ease Two weeks later , Dr Jekyll gave a dinner for a few old friends . Mr Utterson stayed behind when the others left . Jekyll was a large , strong man of fifty with a smooth , clever and kind face , and he loved the quiet lawyer . “ Jekyll , ” said Utterson , “ I want to talk about your will . ” The doctor laughed , but he did not like the subject . “ My poor Utterson , nobody was ever so upset about a will . Nobody except Lanyon , when he heard my scientific ideas . Oh , he is a good man , but he has such a narrow mind . I was never more disappointed in any man than in Lanyon . ” “ You know I never liked that will , ” said Utterson . “ And now I have learned something about young Hyde . ” The doctor’s face went pale , even to the lips . “ I do not want to hear more , ” he said . “ My position is very strange , Utterson . Talking cannot help it . ” “ You can trust me . Tell me everything , and I am sure I can get you out of this . ” “ My good Utterson , this is very kind of you . I would trust you before any man alive . But it is not as bad as you think . The moment I choose , I can be free of Mr Hyde . I give you my hand on that . This is a private matter , and I ask you to leave it alone . ” Utterson looked into the fire . “ I am sure you are right , ” he said at last . “ But there is one more thing , ” said the doctor . “ I really care about poor Hyde . I know you have met him , and I fear he was rude . But if I die , promise me that you will help him and make sure he gets what is his . ” “ I cannot pretend that I shall ever like him . ” “ I don’t ask that , ” said Jekyll , and he put his hand on his friend’s arm . “ I only ask you to help him for my sake , when I am no longer here . ” Utterson gave a deep sigh . “ Well , ” he said , “ I promise . ” IV . A Murder in the Fog Almost a year later , in October , a terrible crime shocked London . A maid was sitting at her window late at night . The moon was full , and she could see the lane below very clearly . She saw a kind old gentleman with white hair walking along it . A very small man was coming towards him . The old gentleman stopped and spoke to him politely . Perhaps he was asking the way .
