Guest studied it with great interest . “ People think that the murderer must be mad , ” said Utterson . “ No , sir , ” said Guest . “ He is not mad . But it is strange handwriting . ” Just then a servant brought a note . “ Is that from Dr Jekyll , sir ? ” asked Guest . “ I think I know the writing . May I see it ? ” It was only an invitation to dinner . The clerk put the two papers side by side and compared them carefully . “ Why did you compare them ? ” asked Utterson . “ Well , sir , in many ways the writing is the same in both . Only it slopes differently . ” “ Rather odd , ” said Utterson . “ Please do not speak about this . ” “ No , sir . I understand . ” As soon as he was alone , Utterson locked the note in his safe . To forge a letter is to write it falsely in another person’s name , and that was what he now feared . “ What ! ” he thought . “ Henry Jekyll forge a letter for a murderer ! ” And his blood ran cold . VI . Closed Doors Time went on . The police offered a big reward , but Mr Hyde had disappeared as if he had never existed . People told many stories about his cruel , wicked life , but nobody knew where he was . Now a new life began for Dr Jekyll . He saw his friends again and invited them to dinner . He did good work for the poor , and his face looked open and bright . For two months the doctor was at peace . On the eighth of January , Utterson and Lanyon had dinner at Jekyll’s house , and the three old friends were happy together , as in the old days . But on the twelfth the door was shut to the lawyer . “ The doctor is staying in , ” said Poole , “ and he sees no one . ” It was the same on the fourteenth and the fifteenth . So Utterson went to see Dr Lanyon . He was shocked at the change in his friend . Lanyon’s red face was now pale and thin , and he looked much older . There was a deep terror in his eyes . “ I have had a shock , ” said Lanyon , “ and I shall never get better . It is a question of weeks . ” “ Jekyll is ill too , ” said Utterson . “ Have you seen him ? ” Lanyon held up a shaking hand . “ I do not want to hear about Dr Jekyll again . For me he is dead . ” “ But we are three very old friends , Lanyon . ” “ Nothing can be done . Ask him . Some day , after I am dead , perhaps you will learn the right and wrong of this . I cannot tell you . ” Utterson wrote to Jekyll , and the next day a long answer came . “ I do not blame our old friend Lanyon , ” Jekyll wrote , “ but I agree with him that we must never meet again . From now on I shall live alone . If my door is shut , even to you , do not doubt my friendship . I have brought on myself a punishment and a danger that I cannot name . You can do only one thing for me : do not ask me about it . ”
