A week later Lanyon went to bed ill , and in less than two weeks he was dead . After the funeral , Utterson opened a letter that Lanyon had left for him . Inside was another envelope . On it was written : “ Not to be opened until the death or disappearance of Dr Henry Jekyll . ” Disappearance again ! The same word as in the will . Utterson wanted very much to read the paper at once . But he was an honest lawyer , and he put the envelope in his safe unopened . He still went to Jekyll’s house , but the door was always shut . Poole told him that the doctor now lived almost all the time in his cabinet . The doctor was very silent , and he did not read . Slowly Utterson began to visit less often . One Sunday he was walking again with Enfield , and they came to the old door . “ Well , that story is over , ” said Enfield . “ We shall never see Mr Hyde again . And now I know that this door is the back way into Dr Jekyll’s house . ” “ Let us look into the courtyard , ” said Utterson . “ I am worried about Jekyll . ” The courtyard was cool and already dark . The middle window was half open , and beside it sat Dr Jekyll . He looked as sad as a prisoner in a cell . “ Jekyll ! ” cried Utterson . “ I hope you are better . Come for a walk with us . ” “ I am very low , Utterson , ” said the doctor . “ I would like to come , but no , it is impossible . I dare not . But I am very glad to see you . ” “ Then we shall stay down here and talk . ” “ That is just what I was going to suggest , ” said the doctor with a smile . But suddenly the smile disappeared . In its place came a look of such terror and despair that the two men below went cold . Then the window was shut at once . They left the courtyard without a word . Only in the next street did Utterson look at his cousin . They were both pale , and there was the same horror in their eyes . “ God forgive us , God forgive us , ” said Mr Utterson . But Enfield only nodded and walked on in silence . VII . The Last Night One evening in March , Poole came to Mr Utterson’s house . His face was white . “ What is the matter , Poole ? ” asked the lawyer . “ Is the doctor ill ? ” “ Mr Utterson , there is something wrong . The doctor is shut up in his cabinet again , and I am afraid . I have been afraid for a week , and I cannot bear it any more . Will you come with me and see for yourself ? ” It was a wild , cold night . A pale moon lay on her back in the sky , and the wind blew dust through the empty streets . Utterson felt that something terrible was going to happen . All the servants were standing together in the hall of the doctor’s house , like frightened sheep . When they saw Mr Utterson , the maid began to cry .
