X . The Voyage to England The queen went straight to the king . She was crying . “ Oh , my lord , what have I seen tonight ! ” she said . “ Hamlet is as mad as the sea in a storm . He heard something move behind the curtain . He cried , ‘ A rat , a rat ! ’ And he killed good old Polonius . ” “ Oh , terrible ! ” said the king . “ If I had been there , he would have killed me . Where has he gone ? ” “ To take away the body . He is crying over what he did . ” The king sent Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to find Hamlet , and they brought him to the king . “ Now , Hamlet , where is Polonius ? ” asked the king . “ At supper , ” said Hamlet . “ Not where he eats , but where he is eaten . The worms are eating him now . If your servants can’t find him in heaven , look for him in the other place yourself . But if you don’t find him within a month , you will smell him when you go up the stairs . ” The king sent servants to look for the body . Then he spoke to Hamlet in a serious voice . “ Hamlet , we must keep you safe after what you did . So you must go to England at once . The ship is ready , and the wind is good . ” “ Good , ” said Hamlet . Then he turned to the king . “ Goodbye , dear mother . ” “ I am your loving father , Hamlet , ” said the king . “ My mother , ” said Hamlet . “ A husband and wife are one body , so you are my mother too . ” And he left . When he had gone , the king spoke his secret thoughts aloud . “ England , if you care about my friendship , you will obey the letters that my men are bringing you . They ask you to kill Hamlet as soon as he arrives . He is like a fever in my blood , and you must cure me . ” On his way to the ship , Hamlet saw a great army marching across Denmark . He asked a captain about it . “ These are the soldiers of Fortinbras , Prince of Norway , ” said the captain . “ We are going to fight Poland for a little piece of land . There is nothing valuable on it . Only the name is worth anything . ” The captain went on his way . Hamlet stood and watched the long lines of soldiers . “ Everything I see accuses me , ” he said to himself . “ This young prince is ready to risk everything for honour , even for an eggshell . Twenty thousand men are going to their graves for a piece of land that is too small to bury them all . And my father was killed , but I do nothing . Oh , from this time on , let my thoughts be bloody , or let them be worth nothing ! ” Then he went on to the ship , and it sailed for England .
