XI . Ophelia After her father’s death , Ophelia became very strange . She walked round the castle and talked about her father . Sometimes she laughed , and sometimes she cried , but her words did not make sense . One day she came to see the queen . Her hair was loose , and she was singing a sad song about a man who was dead and gone . There was grass at his head and a stone at his feet . “ How are you , my pretty lady ? ” asked the king . “ Well , thank you , ” said Ophelia . “ We know what we are , but we don’t know what we may be . ” She sang again , and then she said , “ We must be patient . But I can’t stop crying when I think of him in the cold ground . My brother will hear about it . Goodnight , ladies , goodnight , sweet ladies . ” And she went out . The king turned to the queen . “ Oh , Gertrude , when sorrows come , they don’t come alone . They come in whole armies . First her father was killed . Then your son went away . We buried Polonius quickly and secretly , and now the people are whispering about it . Poor Ophelia has lost her mind . And last of all , her brother has come back from France in secret . ” Suddenly they heard a loud noise , and the door broke open . Laertes rushed in with a sword in his hand . Outside , a crowd was shouting , “ Laertes will be king ! ” “ Oh , you evil king , give me my father ! ” cried Laertes . “ Calmly , good Laertes , ” said the queen , and she held his arm . “ Let him go , Gertrude , ” said the king . “ Don’t be afraid for me . Tell me , Laertes , why are you so angry ? ” “ Where is my father ? ” “ Dead , ” said the king . “ But not killed by him , ” said the queen quickly . “ I will have revenge for my father , ” said Laertes . “ I don’t care about this world or the next . ” “ And you shall have it , ” said the king . “ But I am not guilty of your father’s death . I will make you see that as clearly as daylight . ” At that moment Ophelia came back . She had flowers in her hair , and she carried flowers in her hands . When Laertes saw her , his anger turned to pain . “ Oh , my dear sister , sweet Ophelia ! ” he cried . “ Can a young girl’s mind die as easily as an old man’s life ? ” Ophelia did not know him . She began to give out her flowers . “ Here is rosemary . It helps you to remember , ” she said , and she gave some to Laertes . “ Please , love , remember . And these are pansies . They are for thoughts . ” She gave flowers to the king and the queen too . “ I would give you some violets , but they all died when my father died . ” She sang softly about a man who would never come again . Then she went slowly out of the room , still singing . A few days later , some sailors brought Horatio a letter from Hamlet . Pirates had attacked Hamlet’s ship at sea . In the fight , Hamlet jumped onto the pirate ship alone , and so he became their prisoner . But the pirates treated him well , and now they were bringing him back to Denmark . Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were still on their way to England . “ Come to me quickly , ” Hamlet wrote . “ I have much to tell you . ”
