II . The New King That morning all the lords and ladies of the court met in the great hall . On the throne sat King Claudius , the brother of the dead king . Next to him sat Queen Gertrude . She was the widow of old King Hamlet , and now she was the wife of Claudius . They had married less than two months after the old king’s death . The new king spoke to the court in a smooth , warm voice . “ The death of my dear brother is still fresh in our hearts , ” he said . “ But life must go on . So I have taken his wife , our queen , as my own wife . We married with one happy eye and one crying eye . ” Then he talked about young Fortinbras . He sent two lords with a letter to the old King of Norway , who was the young man’s uncle . The letter asked the old king to stop his nephew’s plans against Denmark . Next a young man called Laertes stepped forward . He was the son of Polonius , the king’s chief adviser . He asked for permission to go back to France . His father , a talkative old man with a white beard , agreed , and so did the king . Finally the king turned to a young man at the side of the room . He was dressed all in black , and he was not smiling . It was Prince Hamlet . “ And now , Hamlet , my nephew and my son , ” said Claudius . “ Why are there still dark clouds over you ? ” “ No , my lord , ” said Hamlet coldly . “ I have too much sun . ” It was a bitter joke about the words sun and son . He did not want to be the son of this new king . “ Good Hamlet , take off your black clothes , ” said the queen gently . “ You know that everything that lives must die . Why does it seem so special to you ? ” “ Seem , madam ? It doesn’t seem . It is , ” said Hamlet . “ My black coat and my tears only show that I am sad . Anyone can play at being sad . But my sadness is deep inside me , where nobody can see it . ” “ Your father lost a father too , and that father lost his , ” said the king . “ Too much sadness is not natural . Please think of me as your father now . You will be king after me . And don’t go back to your university in Wittenberg . Stay here with us . ” “ Please stay , Hamlet , ” said his mother . “ I will do as you wish , madam , ” said Hamlet . The king was pleased . Tonight there would be a feast , he said , and the great guns of the castle would fire every time he drank . Then everyone left the hall , and Hamlet was alone .
