The ghost looked at Hamlet with sad eyes . “ If you have a son’s heart , don’t let this go on . But whatever you do , don’t harm your mother . Leave her to heaven and to her own heart . Now the morning is near , and I must go . Goodbye , goodbye . Remember me . ” The ghost disappeared , and Hamlet fell to his knees . “ Remember you ? ” he said . “ Yes , poor ghost . I will wipe everything else from my memory . Only your words will live there . Oh , that smiling , evil man ! A man can smile and smile and still be a villain . ” Soon Horatio and Marcellus found him . He only told them that it was an honest ghost . Then he asked them to put their hands on his sword and swear never to speak about that night . At that moment the ghost’s voice came from under the ground . “ Swear ! ” it said . The two men swore . Then Hamlet spoke again . “ Perhaps , from now on , I will act strangely , like a madman , ” he said . “ If you see me like that , never show that you know the reason . Swear it . ” “ Swear ! ” said the voice under the ground again , and they swore . Hamlet sighed deeply . “ Everything in the world is wrong , ” he said . “ And what bad luck that I was born to put it right ! Come , my friends , let’s go . ” V . Mad or Not Mad ? A few weeks passed . Then , one day , Ophelia ran to her father . She was pale and frightened . “ Oh , my lord , I am so afraid ! ” she cried . “ I was sewing in my room when Lord Hamlet came in . His jacket was open , and he had no hat . His socks were dirty and had fallen down round his ankles . He was as white as his shirt . He took me by the wrist and looked at my face for a long time . Then he gave a deep sigh that shook his whole body . At last he let me go and walked out backwards . He was looking at me all the time . ” “ This is the madness of love , ” said Polonius . “ Have you said any hard words to him ? ” “ No , my lord . But I did what you told me . I sent back his letters , and I refused to see him . ” “ That has made him mad , ” said Polonius . “ Come , we must go to the king at once . ” At that time the king and queen were welcoming two young men to the castle , Rosencrantz and Guildenstern . They had been at school with Hamlet , and the king had sent for them . “ You have probably heard about Hamlet’s strange behaviour , ” said the king . “ Please stay with him for a while and find out what is troubling him . ” Then Polonius came in with good news . The two lords had returned from Norway . The old King of Norway had stopped his nephew’s plans against Denmark . Now young Fortinbras was going to fight against Poland instead . He only asked for permission to march his army through Denmark . “ And I have found the reason for Hamlet’s madness , ” said Polonius proudly . Then he began a long speech . “ Because short speeches are the best , I will be brief . Your noble son is mad . I call it mad , because what is madness except being mad ? But that is not important … ”
