“ Tell us the facts , and use fewer fine words , ” said the queen impatiently . Polonius took out a letter and read it aloud . Hamlet had written it to Ophelia . It was a little love poem . It said that she could doubt the stars and the sun , but she must never doubt his love . “ Of course , I told her not to see the prince any more , ” said Polonius . “ After that he became sad . Then he stopped eating and sleeping , and then he went mad . ” “ Do you think this is the reason ? ” the king asked the queen . “ It is very likely , ” said Gertrude . “ Sometimes he walks here in this hall for hours , ” said Polonius . “ Next time I will send my daughter to him . You and I , my lord , will hide behind the curtain and watch . ” Just then Hamlet came slowly into the room , reading a book . The king and queen left quickly , and Polonius went up to him . “ Do you know me , my lord ? ” “ Very well , ” said Hamlet . “ You sell fish . ” “ No , my lord , I don’t . What are you reading ? ” “ Words , words , words , ” said Hamlet . “ This writer says that old men have grey beards and wrinkled faces . He says that their brains are weak . I believe all of it , sir . But I don’t think it’s polite to write it down . ” Polonius went away shaking his head . “ He is mad , ” he said to himself . “ But there is some sense in his madness . Sometimes his answers are very clever . ” VI . Old Friends and Travelling Players Rosencrantz and Guildenstern soon found Hamlet . At first he was happy to see his old friends . “ Tell me , why has bad luck sent you here to this prison ? ” he asked . “ Prison , my lord ? ” said Guildenstern . “ Denmark is a prison , ” said Hamlet . “ Nothing is good or bad in itself . Our thinking makes it good or bad . For me , Denmark is a prison . ” Then he looked at them closely . “ But tell me honestly , as my old friends . Did you come here because you wanted to ? Or were you sent for ? ” The two young men looked at each other and did not know what to say . “ I can see it in your faces , ” said Hamlet . “ The king and queen have sent for you . ” “ My lord , we were sent for , ” said Guildenstern at last . “ Then I will tell you why , ” said Hamlet . “ Lately I have lost all my happiness , and I don’t know why . This beautiful earth seems like an empty rock to me . The wonderful sky seems like a cloud of poison . Man is such a wonderful thing , so noble in his mind and so beautiful in his body . And yet to me he is only dust . ” “ My lord , some actors are coming to entertain you , ” said Rosencrantz . “ We passed them on the road . ” Hamlet was pleased . They were a famous company from the city , and he had often enjoyed their plays . When they arrived , he greeted them warmly and asked the leader , the First Player , for a speech .
