Then he saw Ophelia . “ Sweet Ophelia , ” he said softly . “ In your prayers , remember my sins . ” “ My lord , I have some presents from you , ” she said . “ I have wanted to give them back to you for a long time . Please take them now . ” “ No , not me , ” said Hamlet . “ I never gave you anything . ” “ My lord , you know very well that you did , ” said Ophelia . “ And you spoke sweet words with them . But to a good heart , rich gifts become poor when the giver is unkind . ” “ I did love you once , ” said Hamlet . “ Indeed , my lord , you made me believe so . ” “ You shouldn’t have believed me . I didn’t love you . ” “ Then I was even more wrong to believe you , ” said Ophelia quietly . “ Go to a nunnery , ” said Hamlet . A nunnery was a quiet house where women lived apart from the world and prayed . “ Why would you want to have children who will grow up to be sinners ? We men are all villains . Don’t believe any of us . ” Suddenly he stopped . “ Where is your father ? ” Ophelia was afraid . “ At home , my lord , ” she said . “ Then lock the doors on him , ” said Hamlet , “ so he can play the fool only in his own house . ” He grew wild and angry . “ If you must marry , marry a fool . Wise men know what monsters you women make of them . Go to a nunnery ! ” And he rushed out of the room . Ophelia sank down and cried . “ Oh , what a noble mind is lost here ! ” she said . “ He was a prince , a soldier and a scholar , the hope of the whole country . And I am the most unhappy of all ladies . Now I see his fine mind broken , like sweet bells that ring out of tune . ” The king and Polonius came out from behind the curtain . “ Love ? ” said the king . “ No , it isn’t love , and it isn’t quite madness . There is something in his soul , and he is sitting on it like a bird on its eggs . I am afraid that something dangerous will come out of those eggs . He must go to England at once . The King of England owes us money , and Hamlet will go to collect it . Perhaps a new country will drive this thing out of his mind . ” “ A good plan , ” said Polonius . “ But first , after the play tonight , let the queen talk to him alone . I will hide and listen to everything . ” VIII . The Mousetrap That evening Hamlet gave the actors some last advice . “ Speak the lines lightly and naturally , ” he said . “ Don’t shout , and don’t wave your arms too much . A play is like a mirror . It must show the world as it really is . ” Then he took Horatio to one side . “ Horatio , you are the most honest man that I know , ” he said . “ Tonight the actors will play a scene like my father’s murder . When you see that scene , watch my uncle closely . If his guilt doesn’t show itself , then the ghost was a devil . Afterwards we will compare what we saw . ”
