One of the actors was holding a recorder , a kind of wooden pipe . Hamlet took it and gave it to Guildenstern . “ Will you play on this pipe ? ” “ My lord , I can’t . I don’t know how . ” “ It’s as easy as lying , ” said Hamlet . Then his voice grew hard . “ You can’t make music on this little pipe . But you want to play on me . You want to pull out the heart of my secret . Do you think I am easier to play than a pipe ? You can annoy me , but you can’t play on me . ” When they had gone , he stood alone . “ Now it is the evil hour of night , ” he said . “ Now I could drink hot blood . But first I must go to my mother . My words to her will be as sharp as knives , but I won’t hurt her with my hands . ” IX . Behind the Curtain The king was now afraid of Hamlet . He ordered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to take him to England very soon . Polonius told the king that he was going to hide in the queen’s room and listen . Then the king was alone . He knelt down and tried to pray . “ Oh , my crime is terrible , ” he said . “ Its smell reaches heaven . I killed my own brother . Can heaven forgive a murderer ? Yes , but only if he gives back what he stole . And I still have everything that I killed for : my crown and my queen . Help me , angels ! Bend , my stiff knees . ” At that moment Hamlet walked past on his way to his mother . He saw the king on his knees . Hamlet stopped and quietly drew his sword . “ I could do it now , ” he thought . “ But he is praying . If I kill him now , he goes to heaven . My father died with all his sins on him , with no time to pray . And now I send his murderer to heaven ? No , that is a reward , not revenge . ” He put his sword back . “ I will wait for a worse moment , ” he thought . “ When he is drunk or angry , or doing something evil . Then his soul will go down to hell . ” And he went on to his mother’s room . The king stood up . He had not seen Hamlet . “ My words fly up to heaven , but my thoughts stay down here , ” he said sadly . “ Words without true feeling never reach heaven . ” In the queen’s room , Polonius hid behind the curtain . It was a large , heavy cloth with pictures on it , and it hung across one wall . Hamlet came in . “ Hamlet , you have offended your father very much , ” said the queen . She meant the king . “ Mother , you have offended my father very much , ” said Hamlet . He meant his dead father . “ Have you forgotten who I am ? ” “ No , ” said Hamlet . “ You are the queen , your husband’s brother’s wife . And , although I wish it weren’t so , you are my mother . ” He took her arm . “ Sit down . You won’t move until I show you a mirror . You will see the deepest part of your own heart . ”
