X . The Queen Walks at Night In the castle at Dunsinane , a doctor was talking with one of the queen’s ladies late at night . “ Since the king went to war , the queen has walked in her sleep many times , ” said the lady . “ She gets out of bed , puts on her nightgown and writes a letter . Then she goes back to bed , and all this time she is fast asleep . ” Just then Lady Macbeth came in , carrying a candle . Her eyes were open , but they saw nothing . She put the candle down and began to rub her hands together . “ She often does that , ” said the lady . “ It looks as if she is washing her hands . I have seen her do it for a quarter of an hour . ” “ There is still a spot here , ” said Lady Macbeth . “ Out , damned spot ! Out , I say ! ” In her dream she was trying to wash a spot of blood from her hand . Damned is a strong , rude word , and it means cursed , sent to hell . She was ordering the spot to go away , but it stayed . “ One , two . Why , then it is time to do it , ” she said . “ Hell is dark ! Oh , my lord , a soldier , and afraid ? Why should we be afraid if somebody knows ? Nobody can punish us , because we are too powerful . But who knew that the old man had so much blood in him ? ” “ The Thane of Fife had a wife , ” she whispered . “ Where is she now ? What , will these hands never be clean ? ” She smelled her hand . “ Here is still the smell of blood . All the sweet perfumes of Arabia will not make this little hand smell sweet . Oh , oh , oh ! ” She gave a long , deep sigh . “ Wash your hands and put on your nightgown , ” she went on . “ Don’t look so pale . I tell you again , Banquo is buried , and he can’t come out of his grave . To bed , to bed ! Someone is knocking at the gate . Come , give me your hand . What’s done can’t be undone . To bed , to bed , to bed . ” And she went back to her room . “ A sick mind tells its secrets to its deaf pillow , ” said the doctor sadly . “ She needs a priest more than a doctor . God forgive us all ! Look after her , and take away anything that she could use to hurt herself . I have seen things that I dare not speak about . ” Meanwhile , Scottish lords were marching to meet the English army near Birnam Wood . Malcolm , his uncle Siward and Macduff were leading it . “ Nobody loves the tyrant now , ” said Angus . “ His title of king hangs loose on him , like a giant’s coat on a little thief . ” Back in the castle , Macbeth was shouting at his servants . “ Bring me no more reports ! ” he said . “ Let the thanes all run away ! Until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane , I can’t be afraid . What is the boy Malcolm ? Wasn’t he born from a woman ? ” A servant ran in with a face as white as cream . He told the king that ten thousand English soldiers were coming . “ Take your face away ! ” shouted Macbeth . The servant ran out , and Macbeth sat down heavily .
