XII . The Last Fight Outside the castle , Malcolm’s army stopped . “ Now we are near enough , ” said Malcolm . “ Throw down your leafy branches , and show yourselves as you are . ” The soldiers threw down the branches , the trumpets sounded , and the battle began . Macbeth came out to fight . “ They have tied me to a post like a bear , and I must fight the dogs , ” he said . “ Who is the man that was not born from a woman ? He is the only one that I must fear . ” A soldier came up to him . It was young Siward , the son of the English general . “ What is your name ? ” asked the young man . “ My name is Macbeth . ” “ The devil himself could not say a name that I hate more ! ” cried young Siward . They fought , and Macbeth killed the brave young man . “ You were born from a woman , ” said Macbeth . “ I laugh at swords when a man who was born from a woman holds them . ” In another part of the field , Macduff was looking for Macbeth . “ Tyrant , show your face ! ” he shouted . “ If another man kills you , the ghosts of my wife and children will follow me for ever . Either I fight you , Macbeth , or I will put my sword away unused . ” Meanwhile the castle surrendered easily , because many of Macbeth’s men were now fighting on Malcolm’s side . Macbeth was alone now . “ Why should I die on my own sword , like the old Romans ? ” he said to himself . “ While I see living enemies , my sword is better used on them . ” “ Turn , dog of hell , turn ! ” cried a voice behind him . It was Macduff . “ Of all men , I have tried to avoid you , ” said Macbeth . “ Go back . My soul is already heavy with the blood of your family . ” “ I have no words , ” said Macduff . “ My voice is in my sword ! ” They fought . “ You are wasting your time , ” said Macbeth . “ You can’t make me bleed . It would be as easy to cut the air with your sword . My life is protected by magic , and no man who was born from a woman can take it . ” “ Then give up hope in your magic , ” said Macduff . “ I was not born in the usual way . Before my time , I was cut from my mother’s body . ” Macbeth’s arms went weak . “ I curse the tongue that tells me this , because it has taken away my courage , ” he said . “ Nobody should believe those lying devils any more . They keep their promise to our ears , but they break it to our hopes . I will not fight with you . ” “ Then give up , coward , ” said Macduff . “ We will paint your picture on a sign , like a strange animal at a fair . Under it we will write , ‘ Here you can see the tyrant . ’ ”
