Suddenly Banquo stopped . “ What are these ? ” he said . “ They don’t look like people of this earth , but they are standing on it . You look like women , but you have beards . ” “ Speak , if you can , ” said Macbeth . “ What are you ? ” “ Hail , Macbeth , Thane of Glamis ! ” said the first witch . “ Hail , Macbeth , Thane of Cawdor ! ” said the second witch . “ Hail , Macbeth ! One day you will be king ! ” said the third witch . Hail is an old word for hello , and people used it to greet kings and great men . Macbeth jumped back as if he was afraid . “ Why are you afraid of such good words ? ” asked Banquo . Then he turned to the witches . “ You speak to my friend about great things , but you don’t speak to me . If you can see the future , tell me what I will get . ” “ You will be lower than Macbeth , and higher , ” said the first witch . “ Not so happy , and yet much happier , ” said the second . “ You will not be a king , but your children and your grandchildren will be kings , ” said the third . “ Wait ! ” cried Macbeth . “ I know that I am the Thane of Glamis . But the Thane of Cawdor is still alive , and I can’t believe that I will be king . Where did you learn these things ? ” But the witches did not answer . They disappeared into the air like smoke in the wind . “ Were they really here ? ” asked Banquo . “ Or have we eaten some plant that makes men mad ? ” “ Your children will be kings , ” said Macbeth slowly . “ And you will be king , ” said Banquo . “ And Thane of Cawdor too . Isn’t that what they said ? ” II . The Thane of Cawdor Just then Ross and another lord called Angus rode up to them . “ Macbeth , the king has heard about your great deeds in the battle , ” said Ross . “ He sent us to thank you , and he told me to give you a new title . From today you are the Thane of Cawdor . ” Banquo stared at him . “ What ? ” he said quietly . “ Can the devil speak the truth ? ” “ But the Thane of Cawdor is alive , ” said Macbeth . “ Why are you dressing me in borrowed clothes ? ” “ He is still alive , but he will not live long , ” said Angus . “ He helped our enemies , and he has confessed it . ” Macbeth was silent . “ Glamis , and the Thane of Cawdor , ” he said to himself . “ And the greatest thing is still to come . ” He turned to Banquo . “ The witches gave me Cawdor . Don’t you hope that your children will be kings ? ” “ Be careful , ” said Banquo . “ The powers of darkness often tell us small truths so that we start to trust them . Then they bring us to great harm . ” But Macbeth was not listening . Two of the witches ’ promises were true already , so what about the third ? A terrible idea came into his mind . It was the idea of killing the king . The picture was so horrible that his hair stood up and his heart knocked against his ribs .
