Let’s go to the king . ” In the royal palace at Forres , Malcolm told his father about the traitor . “ The Thane of Cawdor confessed everything and asked for your forgiveness , ” he said . “ Nothing in his life was as fine as the way he left it . He died calmly and bravely . ” “ There is no way to read a man’s mind in his face , ” said the king sadly . “ I trusted him completely . ” Then Macbeth and Banquo came in , and the king’s face lit up . “ My dear cousin , I can never thank you enough ! ” he cried . Then he held Banquo in his arms and called him noble . The king had more news for his lords . “ I want you all to know that my son Malcolm will be king after me , ” he said . “ From today he will be the Prince of Cumberland . ” Everyone understood , because the Prince of Cumberland was always the next king . “ And tonight , ” the king went on , “ I will visit Macbeth’s castle at Inverness and be his guest . ” Macbeth bowed . “ Then I will ride ahead and tell my wife the happy news , ” he said . But as he left , dark thoughts filled his head . “ The Prince of Cumberland is a step in my way , ” he said to himself . “ I must jump over it , or I will fall . Stars , hide your light ! Don’t let anyone see my black and deep wishes . ” III . Lady Macbeth In the castle at Inverness , Lady Macbeth was reading a letter from her husband . “ I met them on the day of our victory , ” wrote Macbeth . “ They know more than any human knows . I wanted to ask them more , but they disappeared into the air . While I was standing there in wonder , messengers came from the king and greeted me as Thane of Cawdor . The witches used this name for me first , and they also told me that I will be king . I am telling you this , my dearest partner , because I want you to be happy too . Think about it , and goodbye . ” Lady Macbeth put down the letter . “ You are Thane of Glamis and Thane of Cawdor , and you will be what they promised , ” she said . “ But I am afraid of your nature . It is too full of the milk of human kindness . ” The milk of human kindness means gentleness and softness , like the milk that a mother gives her baby . His wife thought that Macbeth was too kind to take the shortest way to the crown . “ You want to be great , but you don’t have the cruelty that ambition needs , ” she went on . “ You want to win , but you want to win honestly . Come home quickly , and I will pour my courage into your ears . ” Then a servant told her that the king was coming to the castle that night . When he had gone , Lady Macbeth spoke quietly to the dark .
