“ We fail ? Just make your courage strong , and we will not fail , ” she said . “ When Duncan is asleep , I will give his two guards so much wine that they will sleep like pigs . Then we can do anything to the king , and we will put the blame on his guards . ” Macbeth looked at her with wonder . “ You should only have sons , because your brave spirit should only make men , ” he said . “ We will put blood on those two sleeping guards and use their own knives . Then everyone will think that they did it . I am ready . Let’s go back . We must hide our false hearts behind false faces . ” IV . A Dagger in the Air It was after midnight , and there was no moon and there were no stars . In the courtyard of the castle , Banquo was walking with his son , Fleance , who was carrying a torch . “ The heavens are saving their candles tonight , ” said Banquo . “ I am very tired , but I don’t want to sleep because I have had bad dreams . ” Then he heard a noise . “ Who’s there ? Give me my sword ! ” It was Macbeth , with a servant . “ What , sir , not in bed yet ? ” said Banquo . “ The king is sleeping . He was very happy tonight , and he sent this diamond to your wife . ” He gave Macbeth a beautiful diamond . “ I dreamed of the three witches last night , ” he added . “ They told you some truth . ” “ I don’t think about them , ” said Macbeth . “ But when we have an hour , let’s talk about them . If you support me when the time comes , it will bring you honour . ” “ I am happy to have more honour , ” said Banquo carefully , “ but I will not lose the honour that I have . My heart must stay free , and my loyalty must stay clean . ” Banquo and Fleance went to bed . Macbeth told his servant to ask Lady Macbeth to ring the bell when his drink was ready . Then he was alone in the dark . Suddenly he saw something in the air in front of him . “ Is this a dagger which I see before me ? ” he whispered . A dagger is a short knife for fighting , and the handle of this one was turned towards his hand . He tried to take it , but his hand closed on nothing . “ I can’t hold you , but I can still see you , ” he said . “ Are you only a dagger of the mind , a picture made by my hot brain ? ” The dagger seemed to lead him towards the king’s room . Then drops of blood appeared on it . “ There is no dagger , ” said Macbeth . “ It is the bloody business in my mind , and that is what my eyes are seeing . ” Then a bell rang softly . “ The bell is calling me , ” said Macbeth . “ Don’t hear it , Duncan , because it is calling you to heaven , or to hell . ” And he walked slowly and quietly away , like a ghost . Lady Macbeth was waiting in another part of the castle . The wine had made the guards drunk , and it had made her bold . An owl gave a long , sad cry .
