“ He is doing it now , ” she said to herself . “ The doors are open , and the guards are snoring . I put their daggers ready for him . If the king hadn’t looked like my father as he slept , I would have done it myself . ” Macbeth came in . His face was white , and his hands were red . “ I have done the deed , ” he said . Then he looked at his hands . “ This is a sad sight . Two men in the next room woke up for a moment . One cried ‘ God bless us ! ’ and the other said ‘ Amen ’ , and then they went back to sleep . I wanted to say ‘ Amen ’ too , but the word stuck in my throat . I needed God’s blessing more than anyone , so why couldn’t I say it ? Then I thought I heard a voice . It cried to the whole house , ‘ Sleep no more ! Macbeth has murdered sleep ! ’ ” “ Stop thinking such sick thoughts , or they will make us mad , ” she said . “ Go and get some water , and wash this dirty proof from your hands . ” Then she saw what he was holding . “ Why did you bring these daggers ? They must stay there . Take them back , and put blood on the sleeping guards . ” “ I won’t go back , ” said Macbeth . “ I am afraid to think of what I have done , and I can’t look at it again . ” “ Weak man ! Give me the daggers , ” she said . “ Only a child is afraid of a painted devil . ” She took the daggers and went to the king’s room . Suddenly there was a loud knocking at the gate . Macbeth jumped , and he stared at his hands . “ Every noise makes me afraid , ” he said . “ Can all the water in the great ocean wash this blood from my hand ? No . This hand will turn the green sea red . ” Lady Macbeth came back , and now her hands were red too . “ My hands are the same colour as yours , ” she said , “ but I would be ashamed to have a heart as white as yours . ” The knocking came again . “ Someone is at the south gate . A little water will clean us of this deed . How easy it is ! Put on your nightgown , because people must think that we were asleep . ” Macbeth listened to the knocking . “ Wake Duncan with your knocking ! ” he said . “ I wish you could . ” V . Knocking at the Gate The knocking at the gate went on and on . At last the porter got out of bed . The porter was the man who opened and closed the castle gate , and he was still half drunk after the feast . “ Knock , knock , knock ! ” he grumbled . “ If I was the porter at the gate of hell , I would be busy with the key all day . ” He pretended for a while that he was letting sinners into hell . Then at last he opened the gate . Two lords came in . One was Lennox , and the other was Macduff , the Thane of Fife . Macbeth came out in his nightgown to meet them . “ Is the king awake ? ” asked Macduff . “ He told me to come to him early . ” Macbeth showed him the king’s door , and Macduff went in .
