VI . Banquo’s Ride Macbeth was now King of Scotland . He lived in the royal palace at Forres , and Lady Macbeth was his queen . One day Banquo was walking alone in the palace and thinking about the witches . “ Now you have it all , just as the witches promised , ” he said to himself . “ King , Cawdor , Glamis , everything . And I am afraid that you played very foully for it . But they also said that I will be the father of many kings . If they told the truth to you , perhaps they told the truth to me too . ” Trumpets sounded , and the king and queen came in with their lords . “ Here is our chief guest , ” said Macbeth , smiling . “ Tonight we are having a great supper , Banquo , and you must come . Are you riding this afternoon ? ” “ Yes , my lord . I will be away until supper , and if my horse is slow , I will be an hour or two late . ” “ Don’t miss our feast , ” said Macbeth . When Banquo told him that Fleance was riding with him , Macbeth smiled . “ Then I hope that your horses are fast and sure . ” When Banquo had gone , Macbeth sent everyone away . “ To be king is nothing if I am not safe , ” he said to himself . “ Banquo is brave and wise , and he is the only man that I fear . The witches said that his children would be kings . They put a crown on my head , but I have no son to take it after me . So I did all this for Banquo’s children ! For them I killed the good Duncan , and for them I lost my peace and my soul . No ! That will not happen . ” He had called two men to the palace . They were poor and angry , because life had treated them badly . Macbeth told them lies about Banquo , and he made them believe that Banquo was the cause of all their bad luck . “ He is your enemy , and he is mine too , ” he said . “ I am the king , so I could get rid of him openly . But he has friends who are my friends too , and so I need your help . It must be done tonight , not far from the palace . His son Fleance is riding with him , and Fleance must share his father’s dark hour . ” “ We will do it , my lord , ” said the two men . In another room , Lady Macbeth was sitting alone . “ We have what we wanted , but there is no joy in it , ” she thought . Macbeth came in , and she saw his worried face . “ Why are you always alone , my lord , with such sad thoughts ? ” she asked . “ What’s done is done . You can’t change it . ” “ We have hurt the snake , but we haven’t killed it , ” said Macbeth . “ Every night I have terrible dreams . Duncan is in his grave , and he sleeps well after life’s fever . Nothing can touch him now . Oh , my mind is full of scorpions , dear wife ! Banquo and his son Fleance are still alive . ” A scorpion is a small animal with a poisonous sting in its tail . “ But they won’t live for ever , ” she said .
