“ That’s my comfort , ” he said . “ Before night falls , a terrible deed will be done . Don’t ask , dearest . It is better for you not to know , and when it is done , you can praise it . Come , night , and close the eyes of the gentle day . ” As the sun went down , the two men were waiting on a quiet road near the palace . A third man joined them and said that Macbeth had sent him . Soon Banquo and Fleance came along the road on foot . As everyone usually did , they had left their horses with servants , and they were walking the last mile to the palace gate . Fleance was carrying a torch . “ It will rain tonight , ” said Banquo , looking at the sky . “ Let it come down ! ” shouted one of the men , and they attacked him . “ Oh , treachery ! ” cried Banquo . Treachery is the act of a false friend . “ Run , Fleance , run ! One day you can pay them back for this ! ” Someone knocked the torch to the ground , and it went out . In the darkness Fleance ran away . Banquo fell to the ground , and he never got up again . “ Who put out the light ? ” said the third man . “ There is only one dead , and the son has escaped . ” “ We have lost the better half of our work , ” said the first man . VII . The Ghost at the Feast In the great hall of the palace , the lords were sitting down to supper , and the king was welcoming them . At that moment he saw one of the murderers at the door . Macbeth went over to him quietly . “ There’s blood on your face , ” he whispered . “ It is Banquo’s , ” said the man . “ He is lying by the road , and he will never come back . But Fleance escaped . ” Macbeth went pale . “ Then my fear comes back , ” he said . “ Without that , I would be as solid as a rock . But the grown snake is dead . The little snake will be dangerous one day , but it has no teeth now . Go , and we will talk again tomorrow . ” “ My royal lord , ” called Lady Macbeth , “ you are not looking after your guests . ” Macbeth turned to the lords . “ Enjoy your food , my friends ! ” he said . “ All the noble men of our country are under this roof tonight , and only our friend Banquo is missing . I hope that nothing bad has happened to him . ” “ Please sit with us , Your Highness , ” said Lennox , and he showed him an empty chair . Macbeth looked at the chair . But it was not empty . Banquo was sitting in it . His face was white , and there was blood in his hair . Nobody else could see him . “ Which of you did this ? ” cried Macbeth . Then he stared at the ghost . “ You can’t say that I did it ! Don’t shake your bloody hair at me ! ” “ Gentlemen , stand up , ” said Ross . “ His Highness is not well . ” “ Sit , worthy friends , ” said Lady Macbeth quickly . “ My lord is often like this , and he has been like this since he was young . It will soon pass . If you look at him , you will only make him worse . ”
