VIII . The Witches ’ Cauldron In a dark cave , a great pot was boiling over a fire . This kind of pot is called a cauldron . The three witches were walking round it in a circle while thunder rolled outside . The witches threw strange and horrible things into the cauldron . They threw in a poisonous toad , the eye of a newt , the toe of a frog and the wing of a little owl . And while they worked , they sang a strange song about fire and trouble . Suddenly the second witch stopped . “ My thumbs are pricking , ” she said . “ Something evil is coming this way . ” It was Macbeth . “ You secret , black and midnight women ! ” he said . “ What are you doing ? ” “ A deed without a name , ” said the witches . “ I don’t care how you know these things , but answer my questions , ” said Macbeth . “ Let the winds knock down the churches and the waves eat the ships . Just answer me . ” The witches threw more things into the fire , and there was a crash of thunder . A head in a soldier’s helmet rose out of the cauldron . It was the first apparition . An apparition is a ghost or a strange picture that appears in the air . “ Macbeth ! Macbeth ! Macbeth ! ” said the head . “ Be careful of Macduff , the Thane of Fife . Let me go . Enough . ” And it went down into the cauldron . “ You have guessed my fear , ” said Macbeth . Then there was more thunder , and the second apparition rose . It was a child covered in blood . “ Macbeth ! Macbeth ! Macbeth ! ” it said . “ Be bloody , bold and strong . Laugh at the power of man , because no man who was born from a woman can harm Macbeth . ” And it went down . “ Then live , Macduff , ” said Macbeth . “ Why should I be afraid of you ? But I will make doubly sure . You will not live , and then I can tell my pale fear that it lies . ” The third apparition rose . It was a child with a crown on his head and a tree in his hand . “ Be as brave as a lion , and don’t worry about your enemies , ” said the child . “ Macbeth will never be defeated until Great Birnam Wood comes to high Dunsinane Hill to fight against him . ” And it went down . Birnam Wood was a large forest . Dunsinane was a high hill a few miles from the forest , and Macbeth had a strong castle on it . “ That will never happen , ” said Macbeth happily . “ Who can order a forest to march , or tell a tree to pull its roots out of the earth ? So I will live a long life and die when my time comes , like other men . But my heart is still beating with one question . Will Banquo’s children ever be kings in this country ? ” “ Don’t try to know more , ” said the witches . “ I must know ! ” cried Macbeth . “ If you refuse , I curse you for ever ! ” Suddenly the cauldron sank into the ground , and strange music started to play . “ Show him , and break his heart ! ” cried the witches . “ Come like shadows , and go like shadows ! ” Then eight kings walked slowly past Macbeth , one after another . Each king wore a crown , and the last one was holding a mirror . In the mirror Macbeth could see many more kings . Behind them all came the ghost of Banquo . There was blood in his hair , but he was smiling at Macbeth , and he pointed at the kings as if to say , “ These are my children . ”
