“ You look too much like Banquo ! ” cried Macbeth to the first king . “ Horrible witches , why are you showing me this ? Will this line of kings go on until the end of the world ? Now I know it is true . They are all Banquo’s children . ” The witches danced around him , and then they disappeared . Then Lennox came in with news . “ Macduff has run away to England , my lord , ” he said . Macbeth was silent for a moment . Then he spoke to himself . “ From now on , when I have a thought , I will act at once . I will attack Macduff’s castle and take Fife . His wife , his babies and everyone in his family will die . No more strange sights ! I will do it before my anger goes cold . ” IX . Macduff’s Family In the castle in Fife , Lady Macduff was talking with Ross while her little son listened . “ Why did my husband run away to England ? ” she asked angrily . “ He left his wife and his babies in a house that he himself ran away from . He doesn’t love us . Even the little wren , the smallest of birds , fights the owl to save her young ones in the nest . ” “ Dear cousin , please be patient , ” said Ross . “ Your husband is noble and wise , and he understands these cruel times . ” Then he left sadly . Lady Macduff turned to her son . “ Your father is dead , ” she said bitterly . “ How will you live now ? ” “ Like the birds , mother , ” said the boy . “ On what I can find . ” The boy was clever , and she could not help smiling . “ Was my father a traitor , mother ? ” he asked . “ Yes , he was . A traitor is someone who makes a promise and breaks it . ” “ And must everyone who does that be hanged ? Who must hang them ? ” “ The honest men . ” “ Then the liars are fools , ” said the boy , “ because there are enough liars to beat the honest men and hang them . ” Suddenly a stranger ran in . “ You don’t know me , lady , but you are in danger , ” he said . “ Take your little ones and go now ! I dare not stay any longer . ” And he ran out again . “ Where can I run ? ” said Lady Macduff . “ I have done no harm . But in this world , doing harm is often praised , and doing good is sometimes dangerous . ” Then some men with hard , cruel faces came in . “ Where is your husband ? ” asked one of them . “ I hope he is in no place where men like you can find him , ” said Lady Macduff . “ He’s a traitor , ” said the man . “ You’re a liar ! ” cried the little boy , who bravely stood up for his father . The man struck the boy with his sword , and the boy fell . “ Run away , mother ! ” he cried . “ Please run ! ” Lady Macduff ran out of the room , crying for help , but the men followed her . That day Macbeth’s men killed Lady Macduff , her children and her servants . They killed everyone they could find .
