X . Queen Morgana’s Plot After Merlin left the court , Queen Morgana came back to Camelot and knelt in front of Arthur . “ Brother , forgive me for my angry words , ” she said . Arthur lifted her up and kissed her . “ I have only love for you , ” he said . One day she asked to borrow Excalibur , and Arthur let her take it . Secretly she told her goldsmiths to make a sword and a scabbard exactly like it . Then she gave Arthur a beautiful black horse for a royal hunt . The horse was so fast that only one knight , Sir Accalon of Gaul , could stay with the King . Soon the two of them were lost . At sunset they came to the sea . A ship with silk sails came to the beach , and twelve lovely ladies stepped off it . “ Welcome , King Arthur ! Welcome , Sir Accalon ! ” they said . “ Come and eat . ” The two men went on board , ate well and fell into a deep sleep . Arthur woke up in a dark prison with twenty - two other knights . “ This is the castle of Sir Domas the Black , ” one of them told him . “ He wants the last castle of his brother , Sir Ontzlake , but he is afraid to fight his brother himself . So he keeps knights here until one of them agrees to fight for him . ” “ I will fight , ” Arthur told Sir Domas’s messenger , “ if all these prisoners go free . ” He sent a letter to Queen Morgana and asked for Excalibur . Morgana laughed and sent him the copy . Meanwhile Sir Accalon woke up beside a fountain , and a lady invited him into her tent . “ Sir Ontzlake is wounded , ” she said . “ Will you fight for him against his brother’s champion ? I will give you this sword . ” She showed him Excalibur in its scabbard . So , through Morgana’s tricks , Arthur went to fight a knight who loved him , and that knight had Excalibur . On the day of the battle , helmets covered their faces , so neither knight knew the other . Vivien was there too , but she could not tell which knight was the King . Every time Accalon hit Arthur , his sword cut deep . But Arthur’s sword did not cut Accalon at all . Soon the grass around Arthur was wet with his blood , but Accalon did not bleed . Then Arthur’s sword broke . “ Surrender , ” said Accalon . “ I would rather die with honour , ” said Arthur . Accalon struck him , and Arthur fell to his knees . Then Vivien understood . “ That must be the King , ” she thought , and she said a spell . Accalon’s arm went numb , and Excalibur fell into the grass . Arthur knew his sword at once . “ Treason ! ” he cried , and he seized it . With new strength he struck Accalon again and again . He pulled the scabbard from Accalon’s belt and threw it away . At once Accalon’s wounds began to bleed .
