“ Who are you , traitor ? ” asked Arthur . “ I am no traitor . I am Sir Accalon of Gaul , a knight of King Arthur’s court . ” “ And I am King Arthur , ” said the King , and he took off his helmet . Accalon fainted , and then Arthur fainted too . Vivien took them both to a house of nuns and healed Arthur with a precious cream . When Arthur asked her to heal Accalon too , she lied and said she had no more . That afternoon Accalon died . Arthur knew that Accalon was not to blame . He gave Sir Domas’s lands to Sir Ontzlake and made Sir Domas pay the prisoners . A few days later Queen Morgana came to the King’s room while he was asleep . He was holding Excalibur in his hand . But the scabbard lay at the foot of the bed . Morgana hid it under her cloak and rode away . When Arthur woke up , he rode after her with his knights and Vivien . Morgana saw them coming , and she threw the scabbard far out into a lake . At once a woman’s arm came up out of the lake . It caught the scabbard and pulled it down under the water . Nobody ever saw it again . Then Morgana used a spell that Merlin taught her . She changed herself and her people into big round stones . “ Those stones are Queen Morgana and her court , ” said Vivien . “ I will change them back if you promise to put her to death . ” “ You have a cruel heart , ” said Arthur . “ She has done nothing to you . Her mother was my mother . I forgive her , and I will forgive her again and again . ” “ You are a fool , ” laughed Vivien , and she disappeared . After that she hated Arthur even more than Morgana did . Later Arthur learned what Vivien had done to Merlin . He grieved deeply for his old friend . XI . Sir Pellias and the Lady Ettard One May morning Queen Guinevere was out in the fields with her knights and ladies . A young lady in blue rode up to them . Her name was Parcenet . “ I serve the Lady Ettard of Grantmesnle , ” she said , “ and people say she is the loveliest lady in the world . ” She showed the Queen a picture of Ettard , and the lady in it was very lovely . “ Not as lovely as our Queen , ” said Sir Pellias . “ Be careful , ” laughed Parcenet . “ At home , Sir Engamore of the Green Sleeves fights anyone who says that . ” Pellias knelt in front of the Queen . “ Let me be your champion , ” he said , “ and let me go as I am , without armour . I hope to win some on the way . ” So he rode off with Parcenet , and they laughed and joked all the way . In the Forest of Adventure they came to a wild river . An ugly old woman was sitting beside it . “ Sir Knight , carry me across , ” she said . Parcenet told her to be quiet . But Pellias said , “ King Arthur has taught us to help anyone who needs us . ” He carried the old woman across on his horse . On the other side she jumped down lightly and changed . She was Nymue , the Lady of the Lake ! “ You are a true knight , ” she said . She hung her necklace of emeralds and opals round his neck and disappeared . Pellias did not know that the necklace was magic . Everyone loved the person who wore it .
