On Christmas morning nineteen kings and sixteen dukes came to the church . Each one hoped to be king . First King Lot of Orkney pulled with all his strength , four times . The sword did not move . After him came King Urien of Gore , King Ryence of North Wales , King Leodegrance of Cameliard and all the others . Not one of them could move it . “ Merlin is making fools of us , ” the most powerful lords told the Archbishop . “ Choose one of us to be king . ” “ Be patient a little longer , ” said the Archbishop , because he trusted Merlin . At that moment Merlin brought Arthur through the crowd . The young man walked like someone in a dream . “ This is the true son of King Uther and Queen Igraine , ” said Merlin . Sir Ulfius and Sir Ector promised on their honour that it was true . Arthur pulled out the sword and swung it three times around his head . It flashed like lightning . Then he pushed it back into the anvil . The people shouted so loudly that the ground seemed to shake . Some kings came to greet him , and the friendliest of them was King Leodegrance . But others turned away angrily . “ Are we going to have a boy with no beard as our king ? ” they said . The angriest were King Lot and King Urien . They were married to Arthur’s half - sisters , Margaise and Morgana . Sir Ector and Sir Kay stood sadly to one side . But Arthur went straight to them and kissed them both . Three more times they repeated the test , and each time only Arthur could move the sword . At last the people cried , “ Enough ! Arthur is our king ! ” So he was crowned in the great church . The angry kings made war on him . But the common people and many knights fought on his side . Arthur won two wars . After a famous battle near the Forest of Bedegraine , his enemies never fought him together again . King Lot sent his sons Gawaine and Gaheris to live at Arthur’s court as a promise of peace . King Urien sent his son Ewaine . One enemy , King Pellinore , lost his lands and had to live in the wild forest . King Ryence ran away to his mountains . Arthur kept his promise and made Kay his Seneschal , and Merlin became his adviser . The land had peace again . Brave knights came from everywhere to serve the young king . III . The Black Knight One warm spring day King Arthur and his court were resting in the Forest of Usk . Suddenly a young page appeared among the trees . He was walking beside a horse and holding up a wounded knight in the saddle . The knight’s face was as pale as wax , and his clothes were red with blood . “ My master is Sir Myles , ” said the page . “ This morning we came to a stone bridge over a wild river . On the bridge hung a black shield and a brass hammer . Under them were the words : ‘ Whoever strikes this shield does so at his own risk . ’ Beyond the bridge stood a castle and an apple tree full of shields . My master struck the black shield . A knight in black armour rode out , and his spear went into my master’s side . Then the Black Knight hung my master’s shield in the tree and rode away . He did not even ask how badly my master was hurt . ”
