X . The Duke and Duchess One day , in a green meadow , Don Quixote saw a lady on a white horse . She was out hunting with many people , and she had a hawk on her hand . She was a duchess . Don Quixote sent Sancho to greet her for him . Sancho knelt in front of her . “ Beautiful lady , that knight over there is my master , the Knight of the Lions , ” he said . “ He used to be called the Knight of the Sad Face . I’m his squire , Sancho Panza . ” The duchess smiled . “ Isn’t your master the one in a book , Don Quixote of La Mancha ? ” she asked . “ The very same , my lady , ” said Sancho . “ And the squire in that book is me . ” The duchess and her husband , the duke , had read the book . They wanted very much to meet Don Quixote and laugh at his mad ideas . So they invited him to their castle . At the castle , two servants came out and took Don Quixote in their arms to welcome him . Some ladies put a fine red cloak on him , and everyone threw perfume over him . That day , for the first time , Don Quixote truly believed that he was a real knight - errant . They treated him exactly like the knights in his books . But it was all a big joke , and the duke and duchess planned many tricks for their guests . One day in the garden a lady appeared , dressed in black and crying . She was the Countess Trifaldi . She said that a giant , who was also a magician , had given beards to her and all her ladies . Only Don Quixote could save them . He had to fly to the giant’s kingdom on a wooden horse called Clavileño . The horse arrived that same night . It had a little wooden peg in its neck . To make it fly , you had to turn the peg . Don Quixote and Sancho had to cover their eyes , so that they did not feel sick up in the air . Sancho did not want to get on . But in the end he climbed up behind his master , crying and praying . Don Quixote turned the peg . “ Now they’re flying ! God be with them ! ” everyone shouted . But the horse did not leave the garden . Some servants used big bellows , the kind for blowing on a fire , and Sancho felt a strong wind . “ We must be very high now , ” said Don Quixote . Then the servants held some small flames near their faces . “ My beard is burning ! ” said Sancho . “ We must be near the fire in the sky . ” At last the duke and duchess wanted to end the adventure . They set fire to Clavileño’s tail . The horse was full of fireworks , and it flew into the air with a terrible noise . Don Quixote and Sancho fell to the ground , a little burned .
