They got up and looked around . They were in the same garden ! A letter from the giant said that the adventure was over . Just by trying it , Don Quixote had won . The countess and her ladies had no more beards . Later the duchess asked Sancho what he had seen on the journey . “ I looked out a little from under the cloth , ” he answered . “ And I saw the earth . It was as small as a mustard seed , and the men on it were like hazelnuts . Then we passed the Seven Little Goats , which are stars in the sky . When I was a boy , I looked after goats . So I got off the horse and played with them for nearly three quarters of an hour . ” “ But a hazelnut is bigger than a mustard seed , ” said the duchess , laughing . “ So one man was bigger than the whole earth ! ” “ That’s because I only looked at it from one side , ” answered Sancho . The duke and duchess laughed a lot . Soon after that , the duke told Sancho that it was time to go and rule his island . XI . Sancho the Governor Before Sancho left , Don Quixote gave him a lot of advice . “ First , my son , you must fear God , ” he said . “ Second , you must know yourself . Then you will not be like the frog that wanted to be as big as the ox . And do not be ashamed to say that you come from a family of farm workers . ” He went on . “ Keep yourself clean and cut your nails . Do not eat garlic or onions , because they smell . Walk slowly and speak calmly . Eat little at dinner and even less at supper . Drink little wine . And let the tears of the poor find more pity in you than the words of the rich , but not more justice . ” “ All that is good and holy , ” said Sancho . “ But I won’t remember any of it , except the part about the nails . ” “ What a pity that a governor cannot read or write ! ” said Don Quixote . It was true : Sancho could not read . Sancho arrived at a town of about a thousand people . They told him it was the island of Barataria . It was not an island at all , only one of the duke’s towns . People welcomed him with bells and celebrations , and they gave him the keys of the town . Many of them knew that it was the duke’s joke , but Sancho did not . First they took him to the hall of justice to judge people’s problems . Two old men came in . One of them had a walking stick made of cane . The other said , “ I lent this man ten gold coins . Now he says he has paid me back . ” The old man with the stick said yes , he had paid it back , and he was ready to swear it . Before he swore , he gave his stick to the other old man to hold , so that his hands were free . He swore in front of everyone and then asked for his stick back . Sancho thought for a moment . Then he took the stick and gave it to the other old man . “ Here you are , ” he said . “ Now you’ve been paid . ”
