XII . The Knight of the White Moon Don Quixote and Sancho travelled all the way to Barcelona . There they saw the sea for the first time . A rich gentleman of the city , Don Antonio Moreno , welcomed them into his house . One morning Don Quixote was riding along the beach in all his armour . Then he saw another knight coming towards him with a white moon painted on his shield . “ I am the Knight of the White Moon , ” the stranger said . “ I have come to fight you . You must admit that my lady is more beautiful than your Dulcinea . If I win , you will put down your weapons and stay at home for a year . If you win , my life is yours . ” Don Quixote accepted . The Viceroy , the King’s governor of the city , came to the beach and allowed the fight . The two knights rode at each other . The horse of the Knight of the White Moon was faster , and it reached Don Quixote first . The stranger lifted his lance , because he did not want to hurt Don Quixote . But he crashed into Rocinante so hard that horse and rider fell to the ground . The Knight of the White Moon held his lance over Don Quixote’s face . “ You are beaten , knight , ” he said . “ And you are a dead man if you do not keep your promise . ” Don Quixote answered from the ground in a weak voice . “ Dulcinea del Toboso is the most beautiful woman in the world , and I am the unhappiest knight on earth , ” he said . “ Use your lance and take my life , because you have already taken my honour . ” “ I will not do that , ” said the Knight of the White Moon . “ Let the fame of the lady Dulcinea’s beauty live for ever . I only ask the great Don Quixote to go home to his village for a year . ” Don Quixote promised to do it , like a true knight . Don Antonio followed the knight through the city and found out who he was . It was Samson Carrasco ! This time his plan had worked . He wanted to take Don Quixote home and cure him of his madness . Don Quixote and Sancho left Barcelona very sadly . On the way , Don Quixote had an idea . “ This year we will be shepherds , Sancho , ” he said . “ We will live in the country with our sheep , and we will sing . ” Sancho liked the idea .
