Now he needed only one more thing : a lady to love . A knight without a lady was like a tree without leaves or fruit . In El Toboso , a village near his own , there lived a pretty farm girl called Aldonza Lorenzo . He was once in love with her , but she never knew it . He decided that she was going to be the lady of his thoughts . He looked for a name that sounded like a princess , and he chose Dulcinea del Toboso . II . The Inn and the Knighting One morning in July , before the sun came up , Don Quixote put on his armour and climbed onto Rocinante . He told nobody . He rode out through the back gate of the yard , very happy . But soon a terrible thought came to him : he was not a knight yet ! Nobody had made him a knight , so by the laws of chivalry he could not fight another knight . He decided to ask the first person he met . As he rode , he talked to himself . “ One day a wise man will write the story of my adventures , ” he said . “ Oh , Princess Dulcinea , do not forget your knight ! ” It was very hot . The sun was strong enough to melt his brains , if he had any . When night came , he and his horse were tired and very hungry . Then he saw an inn , a house by the road where travellers could eat and sleep . But to him it looked like a castle with four towers and roofs of shining silver . Two young women were standing at the door . To Don Quixote they were two fine ladies of the castle . Just then a man blew a horn to call his pigs together . Don Quixote thought that a dwarf on the castle wall was playing a trumpet to welcome him . The women saw a man in armour with a lance , and they were afraid . Don Quixote lifted the cardboard part of his helmet and spoke to them in old - fashioned words . “ Do not run away , ladies , ” he said . “ A knight never does any harm to noble ladies like you . ” When the women heard him call them ladies , they burst out laughing . Don Quixote was angry . Then the innkeeper came out . He was a very fat man , and so a very peaceful one . He wanted to laugh too , but he spoke politely . “ Sir Knight , we have no bed here , but we have everything else , ” he said . Don Quixote called him “ lord of the castle ” . He got down from his horse with great difficulty , because he had not eaten all day . The women took off his armour , but they could not take off his helmet . It was tied on with green ribbons , and the only way was to cut them . But Don Quixote did not allow it . So he kept his helmet on all night . For supper they gave him badly cooked fish and hard black bread . One of the women put the food into his mouth , because he could not eat alone with the helmet on . The innkeeper gave him wine through a long hollow reed .
