III . The Burned Books Don Quixote left the inn in high spirits . He remembered the innkeeper’s advice and decided to go home . He needed money , shirts and a squire , a man to help him on his travels . He had not gone far when he heard cries in a wood . There he saw a boy of about fifteen tied to an oak tree . A farmer was hitting him with a belt . “ You coward ! ” shouted Don Quixote . “ How can you beat someone who cannot defend himself ? ” The farmer was afraid of the lance . He said that the boy looked after his sheep and lost one every day . But the boy , whose name was Andres , told a different story . His master had not paid him for nine months . “ Pay him now , or I will kill you with this lance , ” said Don Quixote . The farmer , Juan Haldudo , said he did not have the money with him . He swore he would pay everything at home . “ Sir , if I go with him , he will beat me to death , ” said Andres . But Don Quixote trusted the farmer’s word . “ If you do not pay him , I will come back and find you , ” he said . Then he rode away . When Don Quixote was far away , the farmer tied Andres to the tree again . Then he beat him even harder than before . “ Now call your knight , ” he said , laughing . At last he let him go , and Andres went away crying . Don Quixote knew nothing about this . He rode happily along the road , thinking of his first good deed . Soon six men came along the road with their servants . They were merchants from Toledo , and they were going to Murcia to buy silk . Don Quixote stood in the middle of the road . “ Stop ! ” he shouted . “ Nobody passes here until he says that Dulcinea del Toboso is the most beautiful lady in the world . ” The merchants saw that he was mad . One of them , who liked to joke , answered , “ Sir Knight , we do not know this lady . Show us a picture of her , even one no bigger than a grain of wheat . ” “ No ! ” said Don Quixote angrily . “ You must believe it without seeing her . ” And he rode at the man with his lance down . But Rocinante tripped and fell , and Don Quixote rolled across the field . He tried to get up , but he could not , because the old armour was too heavy . From the ground he kept shouting , “ Do not run away , cowards ! It is not my fault that I am lying here . It is my horse’s fault ! ” Then one of the mule boys took his lance and broke it . With the pieces he hit the poor knight again and again , until the boy was tired . After that , the merchants went on their way . Don Quixote lay there alone and could not move . But he thought that this kind of thing happened to all knights - errant . And he began to repeat lines from old songs aloud . Luckily , a man from his village , Pedro Alonso , came by . He wiped the dust off Don Quixote’s face and recognised him . “ Señor Quixana , who has done this to you ? ” he asked . Pedro Alonso put him on his donkey and took him home .
