At the house were the housekeeper , the niece , the priest , whose name was Pero Perez , and the barber , Master Nicholas . “ Those terrible books have taken away his mind , ” said the housekeeper . “ Tomorrow those books will go into the fire , ” said the priest . When they saw Don Quixote , they ran to hug him . He said he was hurt because he had fought ten giants . They put him to bed and gave him some food , and he fell asleep . The next day , while he was sleeping , the priest and the barber went into the room with the books . There were more than a hundred big ones . The priest kept a few good ones , but nearly all of them went into the fire . That night the housekeeper burned the rest in the yard . Then they built a wall across the door of the book room , so that Don Quixote could not find it . Two days later he got up and went to see his books . He could not find the room . He touched the wall where the door used to be and looked everywhere without a word . At last he asked the housekeeper where his book room was . His niece answered . “ A magician came on a cloud , riding a snake , ” she said . “ He went into the room , and then he flew away through the roof . The house was full of smoke , and there were no more books and no more room . He said his name was Muñaton . ” “ You mean Friston , ” said Don Quixote . “ He is a very wise magician , and my great enemy . ” IV . Sancho Panza Don Quixote stayed at home for fifteen days . He talked a lot with the priest and the barber . He told them that the world needed knights - errant . Sometimes the priest agreed with him , so that Don Quixote stayed calm . During those days Don Quixote also talked to a neighbour , a poor farm worker called Sancho Panza . He was a good , honest man , but not very clever . Don Quixote promised him many things . “ Come with me as my squire , ” he said . “ On one of our adventures I may win an island . Then I will make you its governor . ” Sancho had a wife and children , but he liked the idea of ruling an island very much . So he agreed . Don Quixote sold a few things to get some money . He borrowed a shield from a friend and mended his broken helmet as well as he could . He told Sancho to bring saddlebags , big bags for the journey that hang across an animal’s back . Sancho said he was going to bring his donkey too , because he did not like walking very much . It was a good grey donkey , and Sancho called it Dapple . Don Quixote was not sure , because in his books no squire ever rode a donkey . But in the end he said yes . He thought that later he could give Sancho the horse of the first knight he defeated .
