One night they left the village without saying goodbye to anyone . They travelled so far that night that by morning they felt safe . They took the same road as the first time , across the plain of Montiel . Sancho rode comfortably on his donkey with his saddlebags and his leather wine bottle . “ Sir Knight , please don’t forget the island you promised me , ” said Sancho . “ I’ll know how to rule it , however big it is . ” “ The old knights often made their squires governors , ” answered Don Quixote . “ But I want to do even more for you . In less than six days I may win a kingdom . Then I will make you its king . ” “ Then my wife will be a queen , and my children will be princes , ” said Sancho . But then he thought again . “ No , sir . My wife isn’t good enough to be a queen . A countess , maybe , and even that with God’s help . ” “ Leave that to God , Sancho , ” said Don Quixote . “ He will give you what is best for you . But do not ask for too little . ” “ I won’t , sir , ” said Sancho . “ With a master like you , I know I’ll get everything I can carry . ” So the two of them rode along , talking : a thin knight on a thin horse , and a fat squire on his donkey . V . The Windmills Suddenly thirty or forty windmills appeared on the plain . As soon as Don Quixote saw them , he said to his squire , “ Luck is on our side , friend Sancho . Do you see those thirty huge giants over there ? I am going to fight them and kill them all . With what we take from them , we will become rich . ” “ What giants ? ” asked Sancho . “ Those over there , with the long arms , ” answered his master . “ Look , sir , ” said Sancho , “ those aren’t giants , they’re windmills . And what look like arms are the sails . The wind turns them , and they turn the millstone inside . ” “ It is easy to see that you know nothing about adventures , ” said Don Quixote . “ They are giants . And if you are afraid , go away and say your prayers . I am going to fight them all alone . ” Without listening to Sancho , who was shouting that they were windmills , he put his spurs to Rocinante . “ Do not run away , cowards ! ” he cried . “ Only one knight is attacking you ! ” At that moment a light wind got up , and the great sails began to turn . “ You may wave more arms than the giant Briareus , but you will pay for this ! ” said Don Quixote . With all his heart he asked his lady Dulcinea to help him . Then he covered himself with his shield and held his lance ready . He charged at the first windmill as fast as Rocinante could go . The lance went into one of the sails . But the wind turned the sail so strongly that the lance broke into pieces . The sail carried the horse and the knight with it , and they rolled over and over across the plain . Sancho hurried to help him as fast as his donkey could go . His master could not move . “ God help us ! ” said Sancho . “ Didn’t I tell you they were only windmills ? Nobody could make that mistake unless he had windmills in his own head . ”
