“ Quiet , friend Sancho , ” answered Don Quixote . “ In war , things change all the time . I am sure that the wise Friston , who stole my books , has turned these giants into windmills . He wants to take away the glory of my victory . But in the end his magic will not win against my good sword . ” “ God grant it , ” said Sancho . He helped his master up onto Rocinante . The poor horse was almost as badly hurt as the knight . They rode on towards Puerto Lapice . At lunchtime Don Quixote was not hungry . So Sancho took some food out of his saddlebags and ate it slowly as he rode behind his master . From time to time he drank happily from his leather bottle . To him , looking for adventures seemed like a holiday . They spent that night under some trees . Don Quixote broke off a dry branch and put the iron point of his broken lance on it . Now he had a new lance . He did not sleep all night . He thought about his lady Dulcinea , because the knights in his books always did that . But Sancho , with a full stomach , slept until morning . Neither the sun nor the birds woke him . His master had to wake him . VI . Sheep , a Helmet and Prisoners A few days later , Don Quixote saw a great cloud of dust on the road . “ Do you see that dust , Sancho ? ” he said . “ A huge army is coming , with men from many countries . ” “ Then there must be two armies , ” said Sancho , “ because there’s another cloud just like it on the other side . ” Don Quixote was delighted . He thought that two armies were going to fight a battle . But the dust came from two big flocks of sheep . Don Quixote climbed a little hill with Sancho and explained everything . One army belonged to the Emperor Alifanfaron . The other belonged to King Pentapolin of the Bare Arm . Then he named many knights who did not really exist . Sancho looked and looked , but he saw nobody . “ Sir , I can’t see any of those knights , ” he said . “ And I can only hear sheep . ” “ Fear stops you from seeing and hearing properly , ” answered Don Quixote . “ If you are afraid , stay here . I can win this battle alone . ” And he rode down the hill like lightning . “ Come back , sir ! They’re sheep ! ” shouted Sancho . But his master did not hear him . He rode into the middle of the sheep and began to attack them with his lance . When he did not stop , the shepherds took their slings and threw stones as big as fists at him . One stone hit him in the side and hurt his ribs . Another hit him in the mouth and knocked out some of his teeth . Don Quixote fell off his horse . The shepherds thought he was dead , so they quickly gathered their sheep and hurried away .
