“ And is it finished ? ” asked Don Quixote . “ How can it be finished , when my life isn’t finished yet ? ” answered Gines . Then Don Quixote said to the guards , “ Set these men free . ” “ What madness ! ” said their leader . “ Go on your way , sir , and put that basin straight on your head . ” Don Quixote became angry and attacked him with his lance , and the man fell to the ground . At that moment the prisoners broke their chain . The other guards ran away . “ Now I want you to carry this chain to my lady , Dulcinea del Toboso , ” Don Quixote told the prisoners . “ Tell her about this adventure . ” Gines answered that the King’s guards were going to look for them on every road . “ Then you will go alone , with the whole chain on your back ! ” shouted Don Quixote . Gines was not a patient man . He gave a sign to the others , and they all threw stones at Don Quixote . He fell to the ground . They took the basin off his head and hit him with it . They took Sancho’s coat . Then they all ran off in different directions . Don Quixote lay on the ground , very sad . “ I have always heard it said , Sancho , ” he told his squire , “ that doing good to bad people is like pouring water into the sea . ” VII . A Wooden Cage Because they were afraid of the guards , Don Quixote and Sancho went into the Sierra Morena . These were high , wild mountains where nobody lived . There Don Quixote decided to do mad things out of love for Dulcinea , like the famous Amadis . “ But why , sir ? ” asked Sancho . “ Your lady hasn’t done anything bad to you . ” “ That is the beauty of it , ” answered Don Quixote . “ Anyone can go mad for a reason . But to go mad without a reason , that is something great . ” Then he wrote a love letter to Dulcinea in a little notebook . Sancho had to take it to her . And for the first time he told Sancho who Dulcinea really was . She was Aldonza Lorenzo , the daughter of Lorenzo Corchuelo . “ I know her very well ! ” said Sancho . “ She’s a strong girl , stronger than many of the young men in the village . And what a voice she has ! One day she shouted from the top of the church tower . People heard her from very far away . ” “ That does not matter , ” said Don Quixote . “ For me she is the most beautiful princess in the world , and that is enough . ” Before Sancho left , he watched his master jumping about on the grass . Sometimes his head was down and his feet were in the air . Now he could swear that his master was mad . Near an inn , Sancho met the priest and the barber . They were looking for Don Quixote . Sancho told them everything and wanted to show them the letter . But he did not have it . The notebook was still with his master ! He tried to repeat the letter from memory , but he got all the words wrong . The priest and the barber could not stop laughing .
