VIII . A Book About Don Quixote Almost a month went by . Don Quixote was at home , and he seemed a different man . He talked with the priest and the barber about many things , and he spoke very sensibly . But when they talked about knights , his madness came back . One day Sancho arrived with big news . “ Sir , there’s a book about us now , ” he said . “ Samson Carrasco told me . He’s Bartholomew Carrasco’s son , and he has studied at the University of Salamanca . My own name is in the book , and so is the lady Dulcinea’s . And it tells things that happened when we were alone together . ” “ The writer must be some wise magician , ” said Don Quixote . “ Nothing is hidden from magicians . ” “ Samson says the writer is an Arab called Cide Hamete Benengeli , ” said Sancho . Sancho went to fetch him . Samson was a short young man with a round face , a flat nose and a big mouth . He loved jokes . When he saw Don Quixote , he knelt down and asked to kiss his hands . “ You are one of the most famous knights in the world , ” he said . “ More than twelve thousand copies of your story have already been printed . Some people like the windmills best . Others prefer the sheep or the prisoners . ” “ And am I in the book a lot ? ” asked Sancho . “ You are the second most important person in the story , ” said Samson . “ And many readers enjoy your words more than anyone else’s . ” Sancho was very pleased . Samson also said that , according to some readers , there were too many beatings in the story . “ That’s how you know the story is true , ” said Sancho . “ And I was there for a lot of those beatings . ” After this visit , Don Quixote decided to set out for the third time . The frightened housekeeper ran to Samson’s house to ask for help . Samson came , but in front of everyone he told Don Quixote to go . Nobody understood why . Samson had a secret plan with the priest and the barber . At nightfall Don Quixote and Sancho left the village . Don Quixote wanted to visit Dulcinea in her village first . They arrived in El Toboso in the middle of the night . Everyone was asleep , and they could only hear dogs . “ Sancho , take me to Dulcinea’s palace , ” said Don Quixote . But Sancho had never seen any palace , because he never really took the letter . They searched the dark streets and found only the church . “ It is the church we have come to , Sancho , ” said Don Quixote . At last Sancho said , “ Sir , it will soon be day . Wait in that wood , and I’ll look for the palace in the daylight . ” Sancho left the wood , sat down under a tree and began to think . “ My master is completely mad , ” he said to himself . “ He often takes one thing for another . For him windmills are giants , and sheep are armies . So I’ll tell him that the first farm girl who comes along is Dulcinea . And if he doesn’t believe it , I’ll say that a magician has changed her . ”
