He waited there until the afternoon . Then he saw three farm girls coming from the village on three donkeys . Sancho hurried back to his master . “ Sir , come quickly ! The lady Dulcinea is coming to see you with two of her ladies , ” he said . “ They’re dressed in gold and pearls , and they’re riding three horses as white as snow . ” Don Quixote looked at the road . “ I can only see three farm girls on three donkeys , ” he said . “ God save me , sir ! How can three white horses look like donkeys to you ? ” said Sancho . Sancho went up to the girls , knelt down and spoke to one of them . “ Queen and princess of beauty , here is your knight , Don Quixote of La Mancha , ” he said . Don Quixote knelt beside him . He stared at the girl with wide eyes . He saw only a country girl with a round face and a flat nose , and she was not very pretty . “ Get out of the way and let us pass ! We’re in a hurry ! ” shouted the girl angrily . Don Quixote stood up sadly . “ A wicked magician is following me , ” he said . “ He has put clouds over my eyes . And he has changed my lady’s face into the face of a poor country girl . ” The girl kicked her donkey , but the donkey jumped and threw her to the ground . Don Quixote ran to help her . But she got up by herself , took a short run and jumped onto the donkey like a man . Then the three of them rode away as fast as the wind . “ Do you see how much the magicians hate me , Sancho ? ” said Don Quixote . “ And when I came close to her , she smelled of raw garlic . ” Sancho wanted very much to laugh , but he said nothing . IX . Mirrors and Lions One night in a wood , they heard a knight singing sad songs about his lady . He was the Knight of the Wood . He talked with Don Quixote and told him something very strange . “ I have defeated many knights , ” he said . “ And the most famous of them all was Don Quixote of La Mancha . ” “ That cannot be true , ” answered Don Quixote . “ I am Don Quixote , and nobody has ever defeated me . Perhaps it was a magician who took my shape . ” They agreed to fight in the morning . The loser had to obey the winner . That night the two squires ate , drank and talked for a long time . In the morning light , Sancho saw the other squire’s nose . It was enormous , purple and covered in warts . Sancho was terribly afraid of it . Over his armour the knight wore a coat covered with little shining mirrors . So they also called him the Knight of the Mirrors . Sancho wanted to climb a tree and watch the fight from above , far from that nose . Don Quixote helped him up . Meanwhile , the Knight of the Mirrors began to ride towards Don Quixote . But his horse stopped in the middle of the field and would not go on . Then Don Quixote charged with all his strength . He knocked the Knight of the Mirrors off his horse , and the man lay on the ground without moving . Don Quixote got down from Rocinante and took off the man’s helmet . And he saw the face of Samson Carrasco !
