I . Up to the Alm A narrow path went up from the little town of Maienfeld into the Swiss mountains . One hot morning in June a tall young woman was climbing it with a little girl . The child’s cheeks were burning red . She was wearing two or three dresses , one on top of the other , a big red scarf and heavy mountain shoes . She looked like a round bundle of clothes . The girl was five years old , and her name was Heidi . The young woman was her aunt Dete . Halfway up the mountain they came to a small village called Dörfli , which means “ little village ” . There Dete’s old friend Barbel joined them . “ Where are you taking the child ? ” asked Barbel . “ Up to the Alm - Uncle . She must stay with him now . He’s her grandfather . I’ve looked after her for four years , and now I’ve got a good job in Frankfurt . It’s his turn . ” “ But everyone is afraid of him ! He never goes to church , and he lives up there alone like a savage . What will he do with a little child ? ” The Alm was the high meadow where the goats ate grass in summer . The old man lived there alone in a hut , so the whole village called him the Alm - Uncle . “ Why does he live alone ? ” asked Barbel . Dete looked round , but Heidi was not behind them any more . She was climbing far away with Goat Peter and his goats . Peter was eleven . Every day he took the village goats up to the high pasture . He lived in a little hut halfway up with his mother , Brigitte , and his blind grandmother . Everyone called the old woman Granny . “ He once had a fine farm , ” Dete told Barbel quietly . “ But he gambled and drank , and he lost it all . Then he went away to be a soldier in Italy . People even said he killed a man there . Years later he came back with his son Tobias , and Tobias married my sister Adelheid . But soon a heavy beam fell on Tobias and killed him , and my poor sister died a few weeks later . People said it was God’s punishment on the old man . After that he went up to the Alm , and he has lived there ever since , angry with God and with everyone . ” Meanwhile Heidi was hot and tired in her heavy clothes . She watched Peter , who ran about in bare feet . Suddenly she sat down and pulled off her shoes and stockings , the red scarf and both dresses . She left them in a neat pile , and now she ran up the rocks in her light petticoat as easily as the goats . When Dete saw her , she screamed . “ Heidi ! Where are your clothes ? ” Heidi pointed calmly down the mountain . “ There . I don’t need them . ” Dete gave Peter a coin , and he raced down to fetch them . Soon they reached the hut . It stood alone on the edge of the mountain , with three old fir trees behind it . The old man was sitting on a bench and smoking his pipe .
