“ Yes , but I mustn’t . Miss Rottenmeier said so . ” “ And where did you live with your grandfather ? ” “ On the Alm . Oh , it’s so lovely there , so lovely ! ” And at last all her tears came out . “ Cry a little , it won’t hurt , ” said the doctor kindly . “ Then sleep . Tomorrow everything will be all right . ” Downstairs he said to his friend , “ Sesemann , the child walks in her sleep . She’s your ghost . And she’s so homesick that she’s nothing but skin and bones . There’s only one cure : the mountain air at home . She must leave tomorrow . ” “ Ill ? Homesick ? In my house , and nobody noticed ! ” cried Mr Sesemann . “ No , make her well first , and then she can go . ” “ This is not an illness that pills can cure , ” said the doctor . “ If she goes home now , she will get well . If not , it may be too late . ” Mr Sesemann stood still . “ Then there’s only one way , ” he said . X . Home Again At half past four that morning Mr Sesemann rang every bell in the house . The servants jumped out of bed . They thought the ghost had caught their master ! But he only wanted a trunk packed for Heidi , with many of Clara’s clothes too . Sebastian was to take her home . “ Well , little one , ” said Mr Sesemann , “ today you’re going home . ” “ Home ? ” Heidi went white . Then she went red with joy . Clara gave her a basket with twelve white rolls for Granny . Heidi fetched her book from under her pillow and her old hat , wrapped in the red scarf . But Miss Rottenmeier threw the red bundle on the floor . “ You can’t leave this house with that thing ! ” “ The child may take home anything that makes her happy , ” said Mr Sesemann firmly . “ Please thank the doctor a thousand times , ” said Heidi . On the train she held the basket on her lap all the time . “ Sebastian , are you sure Granny isn’t dead ? ” “ No , no , she’ll still be alive . ” At Maienfeld Sebastian gave Heidi a heavy roll of coins , a present from Mr Sesemann , and a letter for her grandfather . Then the baker from Dörfli took her up to the village in his cart . Sebastian was glad , because he did not want to climb the wild mountain . “ Were they unkind to you down there ? ” asked the baker . “ No , they were all kind . Nobody could have a better life than I had in Frankfurt . ” “ Then why have you come back ? ” “ Because I’d rather be with Grandfather than anywhere else in the world . ” In the village Heidi jumped down and ran up the mountain until she could not breathe . She flew into Peter’s hut . “ Oh , dear God , ” said a voice from the corner . “ That’s how our Heidi used to run in . Who’s there ? ” “ It’s me , Granny ! ” Heidi knelt down and held her hands . Granny stroked her curly hair . “ Yes , it’s her hair and her voice . Thank God I’ve lived to see this day ! ” Tears of joy fell from her blind eyes . “ Don’t cry , Granny . I’m back , and I’ll come every day . Look ! ” And Heidi put twelve soft white rolls on Granny’s lap .
