“ Oh , child , what a blessing ! But the greatest blessing is you . ” Then Heidi took off her pretty Frankfurt dress . She tied the red scarf over her petticoat and put on her old straw hat . “ Grandfather might not know me in the fine dress , ” she said . The evening sun was shining as she climbed . Suddenly a red light fell on the grass , and she turned round . The rocks were blazing , the snow glowed , and the whole valley swam in gold . Tears ran down Heidi’s face . She put her hands together and thanked God for bringing her home . Then she saw the fir trees and the hut . Her grandfather was sitting on the bench . Heidi threw down her basket and flung her arms round his neck . “ Grandfather ! Grandfather ! Grandfather ! ” The old man said nothing . For the first time in many years his eyes were wet . “ So you’ve come home , Heidi , ” he said at last . “ Did they send you away ? ” “ Oh no ! They were all so kind . But I couldn’t bear it any longer . I never said anything , because it was ungrateful . Then one morning Mr Sesemann . . . but I think it was the doctor . . . it’s all in the letter . ” The old man read the letter and put it in his pocket without a word . “ Put your money in the cupboard , ” he said . “ Now come and have some milk . ” “ Nothing in the world is as good as our milk , Grandfather , ” said Heidi . Then Peter’s whistle sounded , and the goats came running . Little Swan and Little Bear knew Heidi’s voice at once , and even shy Snowflake pushed her way to Heidi . “ Are you back ? ” said Peter at last . “ Are you coming with me tomorrow ? ” That night Heidi slept in fresh , sweet hay . Her grandfather climbed up ten times to look at her . But she slept peacefully all night and never walked once . She was home . XI . The Bells on Sunday The next day Heidi went to see Granny again . “ I’ve got lots of money now , ” she said . “ Peter can bring you a fresh roll from the baker every day . ” Then she saw the old hymn book on the shelf . “ Granny , I can read now ! Shall I read you a song ? ” She read a hymn about the golden sun . It said that all pain comes to an end , and that after the storm the sun shines again . Granny sat with her hands together , and tears ran down her happy face . “ Oh , Heidi , that makes it light in my heart ! ” she said . On the way home her grandfather agreed that the money was hers , and she could buy Granny’s rolls with it . Heidi jumped for joy . Then she became serious . “ Grandfather , if God had done what I asked at once , I’d have come home with only a few rolls . And I couldn’t read to Granny . But God had a much better plan . We’ll pray every day now , won’t we ? Then he won’t forget us . ” “ And if someone forgot him ? ” said the old man quietly .
