“ Then God lets him go where he wants . And when things go badly for him , nobody feels sorry for him . Grandmamma told me . ” The old man walked on in silence . “ And then nobody can go back , ” he said . “ If God has forgotten someone , he has forgotten him . ” “ Oh no , Grandfather , you can go back ! There’s a story about it in my book . ” At the hut she read him the story of the son who ran away . She read how he went home and said , “ Father , I have done wrong against heaven and against you . I am not good enough to be called your son . ” And his father held him in his arms and had a feast for him . “ Isn’t it lovely , Grandfather ? ” “ Yes , Heidi , it’s lovely , ” he said , but his face was very serious . Late that night he climbed the ladder with his lamp . Heidi was asleep with her hands together . The old man put his hands together too . “ Father , I have done wrong against heaven and against you , ” he said quietly . “ I am not good enough to be called your son . ” And two big tears ran down his cheeks . Early on Sunday morning he called , “ Come , Heidi ! Put on a good dress . We’re going to church ! ” He was wearing his Sunday coat with silver buttons . They walked down hand in hand while bells rang all over the valley . In church everyone whispered , “ The Alm - Uncle is here ! ” After the service he went straight to the pastor’s house . “ I’ve come to ask you to forget my words on the Alm , ” he said . “ You were right . This winter I’ll live in the village . The winter up there is too hard for the child . ” The pastor shook his hand warmly . “ Neighbour , you were in the right church before you came down to mine . ” Outside , everyone wanted to shake the old man’s hand . “ We’re so glad , Uncle ! Come and see us soon ! ” “ Grandfather , you look nicer and nicer today , ” said Heidi on the way home . “ I feel better than I deserve , Heidi . It’s good to be at peace with God and with people . God was good to me when he sent you up to the Alm . ” At Peter’s hut Granny held his hand . “ Thank you for all you’ve done for us , Uncle . But please don’t let Heidi go away again . ” “ Don’t worry , Granny , ” said the old man . “ We’ll all stay together now . ” XII . The Doctor and a Winter in the Village In Frankfurt Doctor Classen was very sad . His only daughter had died that spring . Clara wanted to visit the Alm , but she was too ill to travel . So Mr Sesemann sent the doctor instead . He brought a big parcel from Clara : a warm coat with a hood for Heidi , a thick shawl and soft cakes for Granny , a huge sausage for Peter’s family and tobacco for the old man . “ Good day , Doctor ! ” cried Heidi when he came up the mountain . “ Thank you a thousand times for sending me home ! ” The doctor’s sad face lit up . He took a room in the village , and every day that September he came up to the Alm . Sometimes he went on long walks with the old man , and sometimes he went up to the pasture with Heidi .
