XIII . Clara on the Alm In May Heidi was back on the Alm . Her grandfather was making new wooden stools outside the hut . “ They’re for Clara and Grandmamma , ” said Heidi . “ But will Miss Rottenmeier come too ? ” “ I don’t know . But it’s safer to have a seat ready for her . ” Heidi looked at the plain little stools . “ I don’t think she’ll sit on one of these , Grandfather . ” “ Then she can sit on our green sofa made of grass , ” he said calmly . Then a letter came from Clara . She was coming soon with Grandmamma ! Miss Rottenmeier was not coming . Sebastian had told her terrible stories about the steep rocks . When Peter heard the news , he ran off in a rage . One morning at the end of June a strange line of people came up the mountain . Two men were carrying a chair with a girl in it , wrapped in shawls . Behind them came a lady on a horse , a young man with an empty wheelchair , and a porter with a huge pile of blankets . “ It’s them ! ” cried Heidi . The girls hugged each other with joy . “ My dear Uncle , what a wonderful place you have ! ” said Grandmamma . “ A king could envy you ! ” “ Oh , it’s so lovely here ! ” cried Clara . “ I want to stay for ever ! ” The old man lifted Clara gently into her wheelchair . He did it as if he had cared for sick people all his life . Long ago , when he was a soldier , he had looked after his wounded captain for many months . They had lunch in front of the hut , and Clara ate a second piece of toasted cheese . “ Clara , a second piece ! ” said Grandmamma . Then the old man carried Clara up the ladder to see Heidi’s bed of hay . “ Oh , you can see the sky from your bed ! ” said Clara . Then the old man said to Grandmamma , “ If Clara stays up here for a while , she may get new strength . I’ll look after her . ” The girls shouted with joy , and Grandmamma shook his hand again and again . They agreed on four weeks . The old man made Clara a soft bed of blankets in the hayloft , and Grandmamma rode back to the hotel in Ragaz , down in the valley . In the evening Peter came down with the goats . “ Good night , Peter ! ” called the girls . But Peter only gave Clara an angry look and hit the air with his stick . That night Clara looked through the round window at the stars . She had never seen them before . In Frankfurt the curtains were always closed . Every morning now Clara drank Little Swan’s sweet milk , and in the evening she was hungry for more . The old man climbed high up the rocks to bring back the best herbs for Little Swan . Clara slept better than ever before . She wrote to Grandmamma every day . “ Every morning I wake up and think , ‘ Thank God , I’m still on the Alm ! ’ ” In the third week the old man began to ask , “ Won’t you try to stand a little ? ” Clara tried , but it hurt , and she held on to him . Still , each day she stood a little longer . At last Heidi asked , “ Grandfather , can we all go up to the pasture tomorrow ? ” “ Yes , ” he said . “ But Clara must try to stand again this evening . ” “ Tomorrow we’re coming up with you , Peter ! ” Heidi called . Peter growled like a bear .
