XIV . What Nobody Expected Early the next morning the old man put the wheelchair outside the hut . Then he went in to fetch the girls . Just then Peter came up the path . For weeks Heidi had had no time for him . Now she wanted to spend the whole day with the stranger in the chair ! Peter looked at the chair as if it was his enemy . Nobody was there . He ran at it and pushed it with all his strength over the edge of the slope . Then he ran up the mountain and hid behind a bush . Far below , the chair was rolling over and over . Pieces flew off in all directions . Peter jumped for joy . Now the stranger would have to go home , and Heidi would be his again . “ Where’s the chair ? ” cried Heidi . Just then the wind banged the shed door against the wall . “ Grandfather , the wind did it ! ” The old man looked down the slope . “ If it went down there , it’s in a hundred pieces , ” he said . “ It’s strange , though . ” “ Now I’ll have to go home ! ” said Clara sadly . “ We’ll go up to the pasture anyway , ” said the old man . He carried Clara up in his arms and sat her on a blanket in the sun . Peter was already there with the goats . “ Have you seen the chair ? ” asked the old man . “ What chair ? ” said Peter , without looking up . It was a wonderful day . The goats came and lay down beside the girls , and little Snowflake ate leaves from Clara’s hand . Clara felt a new wish in her heart . She wanted to help others , not only to be helped all the time . After a while Heidi ran to see the flowers , and she came back full of joy . “ Oh , Clara , you must see them ! There are so many ! Can I carry you ? ” “ No , you’re much smaller than me . Oh , if only I could walk ! ” “ Peter , come here ! You must help me ! ” called Heidi . “ Won’t . ” “ If you don’t come at once , I’ll do something you won’t like ! ” Peter went cold . Did Heidi know about the chair ? He came down at once . Heidi and Peter held Clara up , one on each side . “ Now put your foot down hard , ” said Heidi . Clara tried . It hurt . She tried again . “ Oh , that hurt less ! ” Then she took one step , and another , and another . “ Heidi ! I can do it ! I can walk ! ” “ You can walk ! ” cried Heidi . “ Now you’ll never need the chair again . Now we can come up here every day ! ” Slowly they reached the flowers , and Clara sat down among them . The air was sweet , and everything shone in the sun . For a long time she could not say a word . She was too happy .
