Heidi went straight up to him . “ Good day , Grandfather ! ” “ Well , well , what does this mean ? ” he said roughly . He looked at her for a long time from under his thick grey eyebrows , and Heidi looked back without blinking . “ I’ve brought you the child of Tobias and Adelheid , ” said Dete . “ She must stay with you . I’ve done my part . Now it’s your turn . ” “ And when she cries for you , what shall I do then ? ” “ That’s your business . Nobody helped me when she was a baby . ” The old man stood up , and his eyes flashed . “ Go back down the way you came , ” he said , “ and don’t show your face here again soon ! ” Dete said a quick goodbye and hurried away . In the village the women called , “ Where’s the child , Dete ? How could you leave her up there ? The poor little thing ! ” Dete ran on . She did not feel good about it , but she told herself that she could help Heidi later , when she was earning good money . II . At Grandfather’s Hut The old man sat and smoked in silence . Heidi looked around happily . Behind the hut the wind was rushing through the fir trees , and she stood still and listened . Then she came and stood in front of her grandfather . “ I want to see inside the hut , ” she said . “ Come , then . And bring your clothes . ” “ I don’t need them . I want to go about like the goats . They have such light legs . ” “ You can , but bring them . They go in the cupboard . ” Inside there was one large room with a table , a chair , the old man’s bed and a big pot over the fire . A ladder led up to the hayloft . There lay a big heap of sweet - smelling hay , and through a round hole in the wall Heidi could see far down into the valley . “ I’ll sleep here ! ” she called . “ It’s lovely ! ” She made a bed of hay , and her grandfather brought up a rough sheet and a heavy linen sack for a blanket . “ It’s a wonderful bed ! ” said Heidi . “ I wish it was night already . ” “ I think we could eat first , ” said the old man . He held a big piece of cheese over the fire on a long iron fork until it was golden . Meanwhile Heidi put bread , plates and knives on the table . She sat on a low three - legged stool , and he put her bowl of milk on his chair in front of her . She drank and drank . “ I’ve never had such good milk , ” she said . “ Then have some more . ” After the meal he made a chair for her . It was much higher than his own , and Heidi could hardly believe her eyes . “ That’s my chair ! ” she cried . In the evening there was a whistle , and the goats came running down with Peter . A white goat and a brown one came to the old man and licked salt from his hand . “ Are they ours , Grandfather ? Both of them ? ” “ Yes . The white one is Little Swan , and the brown one is Little Bear . ” That night a storm shook the hut . The old man got up and climbed the ladder . “ She’ll be frightened , ” he said quietly . But the moon was shining on Heidi’s happy face , and she was fast asleep . He looked at her for a long time before he went back to bed .
