III . On the Pasture In the morning Heidi woke to a loud whistle and golden sunlight . For a moment she did not know where she was . Then she remembered . She was not with old Ursel any more . Ursel was nearly deaf and always cold , and she made Heidi sit by the stove all day . Now Heidi was on the Alm ! “ Do you want to go up to the pasture with Peter ? ” asked her grandfather . Heidi jumped for joy . “ Then wash first , ” he said , “ or the sun will laugh at you . ” He put a big piece of bread and cheese into Peter’s bag . “ Milk two bowls for her at lunch , ” he told the boy . “ And don’t let her fall over the rocks . ” The meadow was full of flowers : red primroses , blue gentians and little yellow flowers that shone like gold . Heidi ran everywhere and filled her apron . She wanted to put them in the hay by her bed . “ Come on ! ” called Peter crossly . “ If you pick them all , there won’t be any tomorrow . ” At the high pasture Peter lay down and slept . Heidi sat and looked . Far below lay the valley . Across from her rose a huge field of snow and a great grey rock with two sharp towers . A large bird was flying in circles high above and screaming . Heidi had never been so happy . At lunch Peter milked a bowl for her from Little Swan . Heidi drank it , broke off a little bit of bread and gave Peter all the rest with her cheese . “ You can have that . I’ve had enough . ” Peter stared at her . Nobody had ever given him so much food . Then he told her the names of the goats . There was big Great Turk , who pushed all the others , and brave little Goldfinch , who pushed back . And there was a small white goat called Snowflake , who bleated so sadly . “ Her mother was sold two days ago , ” said Peter . Heidi put her arm round the little goat . “ Don’t cry , Snowflake . I’ll come with you every day now . ” Suddenly Goldfinch jumped towards the edge of the cliff . Peter fell , but he caught the goat by the leg . Heidi held out some sweet herbs , and together they led Goldfinch back . Then Peter raised his stick to beat him . “ No , Peter ! Look how frightened he is ! ” “ He deserves it . ” “ You mustn’t hurt him ! ” Heidi’s black eyes flashed , and Peter lowered his stick . “ All right . But then you must give me your cheese tomorrow . ” “ You can have it every day . But you must never beat any of the goats . ” In the evening the sun went down , and suddenly the snow and the rocks began to glow red . “ Peter ! The mountains are on fire ! ”
