“ It’s always like that , ” said Peter . “ But it isn’t fire . ” “ Oh , now it’s pink ! And now it’s grey . It’s all gone ! ” “ It’ll be the same tomorrow . ” At home Heidi opened her apron to show her grandfather the flowers . But they were dry like hay . “ They want to stand in the sun , ” he said . “ They don’t like aprons . ” “ Why does the great bird scream so , Grandfather ? ” “ He’s laughing at the people in the villages , ” said the old man , almost fiercely . “ He’s saying , ‘ Why do you sit so close together and make each other unhappy ? Climb high like me , and you’ll feel better ! ’ ” Then Heidi told him about the fire on the mountains . “ That’s the sun , ” said her grandfather . “ When it says good night to the mountains , it gives them its loveliest light , so they won’t forget it until morning . ” That night Heidi dreamt of shining mountains , with little Snowflake jumping happily among them . IV . Peter’s Granny All summer Heidi went to the pasture , and she grew brown and strong . Then the snow came , and soon it was up to the windows . In winter Peter had to go to school . One afternoon he came up to the hut , white with snow from head to foot . “ Well , General , ” said the old man , “ no army now . Now you must go to school and chew your pencil . ” When Peter left , he said , “ Granny says you should come and see her . ” From then on Heidi talked about it every day . On a sunny day , when the snow was frozen hard , her grandfather fetched a sledge . He wrapped Heidi in the big sack , held her tight and pushed off . The sledge flew down the mountain so fast that Heidi felt like a bird . It stopped right at Peter’s hut . “ Go in , ” said the old man . “ When it gets dark , come out again . ” Inside , Brigitte was mending Peter’s jacket . In the corner a bent old woman sat at a spinning wheel . “ Good day , Granny , ” said Heidi . “ I’ve come at last . ” The old woman felt for her hand . “ Are you the child from the Alm - Uncle ? Are you Heidi ? Your hand is so warm ! ” Heidi looked around . “ Granny , that shutter is banging . Grandfather would nail it at once . ” “ I can’t see it , child , but I can hear it . When the wind comes , the whole hut creaks and rattles . At night I’m afraid it will fall down on us . ” “ But why can’t you see it ? ” “ I can’t see anything . It’s always dark for me . ” “ Not even in the white snow ? Or in summer , when the sun says good night to the mountains ? ” “ Never again , child . ” Heidi burst into tears . “ Can nobody make it light for you ? Nobody at all ? ” “ Come , sit by me , ” said Granny gently . “ When you can’t see , you love to hear a kind voice . Tell me about your life up there . ” So Heidi dried her tears and told her about the Alm , the goats and all the things her grandfather made from wood . “ Do you hear that , Brigitte ? ” Granny said again and again . “ Do you hear what she says about the Uncle ? ”
