Then Peter came home . “ How’s the reading , Peter ? ” asked Granny . “ Same as always . ” Granny sighed . “ I have an old hymn book with lovely songs in it , ” she told Heidi . “ I hoped Peter could read them to me . But it’s too hard for him . ” When it got dark , the old man came to fetch Heidi . At home she said , “ Grandfather , tomorrow we must take the hammer and big nails and mend Granny’s hut . She’s afraid at night , and nobody can help her but you . ” The old man looked at her for a while . “ Yes , Heidi , ” he said . “ We’ll stop the rattling tomorrow . ” The next day he hammered all round Peter’s hut . Brigitte came out to thank him , but he said , “ Save your words . I know what you all think of the Alm - Uncle . I’ll find what needs mending myself . ” All winter Heidi came down on every fine day . Granny’s days were no longer dark and empty . “ Thank God , she’s here again ! ” she said each time . V . Two Visitors Two winters passed , and Heidi was eight . One sunny morning in March the pastor from the village came up to the hut . He had known the old man well many years ago . “ Heidi , go to the goats , ” said her grandfather . “ The child should have gone to school last winter , ” said the pastor . “ Next winter she must come every day . ” “ I won’t send her , ” said the old man . “ Shall a little child walk two hours down the mountain in ice and storm ? Her mother walked in her sleep and was often ill . Shall the child get ill too ? ” “ You’re right , she can’t come from here , ” said the pastor kindly . “ But you love the child . So do it for her : come down to the village and live among people again . Make your peace with God . ” “ The people down there look down on me , and I look down on them . We’re better apart . ” “ God help you , then , ” said the pastor sadly , and he left . The next day Aunt Dete came up . She wore a fine hat with a feather , and her long dress swept the floor . “ I have wonderful news , ” she said . “ A very rich family in Frankfurt has an only daughter . She’s ill and must sit in a wheelchair all day . She’s lonely , and they want a companion for her . It’s such a piece of luck for Heidi ! ” “ I don’t want it , ” said the old man . Now Dete grew angry . “ She’s eight and knows nothing ! You won’t send her to school or to church . The whole village is on my side . And if you go to court , Uncle , old stories may come out that you won’t like ! ” “ Be quiet ! ” shouted the old man , and his eyes burned . “ Take her and ruin her ! And never bring her before my eyes again with a feather hat and words like yours ! ” He walked out . “ You’ve made Grandfather angry , ” said Heidi . “ I’m not coming . ”
