“ Don’t be as stubborn as a goat ! He wants you to go now . And if you don’t like Frankfurt , you can come home again whenever you want . The train is very fast . ” Near Peter’s hut Heidi said , “ I must go in to Granny first . ” “ No , it’s much too late , ” said Dete , and she pulled her on . Peter ran in and told Granny . She opened the window with shaking hands . “ Dete ! ” she called . “ Don’t take our Heidi away ! ” Heidi pulled at Dete’s hand . “ Granny’s calling me ! ” “ Come quickly , ” said Dete . “ When you come back , you can bring her some soft white rolls . She can hardly eat the hard black bread any more . ” “ Yes , she always gives it to Peter ! Then let’s hurry , so I can come back soon . ” After that the Alm - Uncle looked angrier than ever when he walked through the village . And every day blind Granny sighed , “ If only I could hear Heidi’s voice once more before I die ! ” VI . Clara and Miss Rottenmeier In a big house in Frankfurt a girl sat in a wheelchair . Her name was Clara Sesemann . She was twelve , and she could not walk . She had a thin , pale face and gentle blue eyes . Her mother was dead , and her father was often away on business . So a strict housekeeper , Miss Rottenmeier , ran the house . There were also Sebastian , the servant , and Tinette , the maid . One evening Dete arrived with Heidi . Miss Rottenmeier looked at the child in her cotton dress and old straw hat . She did not like what she saw . “ What is your name ? ” “ Heidi . ” “ That’s not a proper name ! ” “ Her name is Adelheid , like her mother’s , ” said Dete quickly . “ And how old is she ? I wanted a girl of Miss Clara’s age . ” “ I’m eight . Grandfather said so , ” said Heidi . “ Eight ! Four years too young ! Can you read ? ” “ No , and Peter can’t either . ” “ Good heavens ! What have you learnt , then ? ” “ Nothing , ” said Heidi truthfully . But Dete was already hurrying away . Clara waved to Heidi . “ Come here . I’ll call you Heidi . I like it . Now lessons will be fun , because I can listen while you learn to read . The tutor comes every morning , and it’s always so long and boring . ” “ But tomorrow I’m going home , ” said Heidi . “ I’m going to take Granny some white rolls . ” “ What a funny girl you are ! ” said Clara . At supper a white roll lay beside Heidi’s plate . When Sebastian came with a big dish of fish , she looked up at him . “ You look like Goat Peter , ” she said . Miss Rottenmeier threw up her hands in horror . “ Can I have that ? ” asked Heidi , and she pointed at the roll . Sebastian nodded , and she put it in her pocket for Granny . “ Adelheid , I see I must teach you everything , ” said Miss Rottenmeier . And she explained how to get up and go to bed , how to come in and go out , how to close doors and keep things tidy . But Heidi had been awake since five o’clock , and she had travelled all day . Her eyes closed . “ Now , Adelheid , have you understood ? ” asked Miss Rottenmeier at last . “ Heidi has been asleep for a long time , ” said Clara , and her eyes were full of fun .
