VII . Kittens , Rolls and a Straw Hat In the morning Heidi ran to the window . She wanted to see the sky and the green grass . But the windows were too high , and she could not open them . Outside there were only walls and windows . Heidi felt like a bird in a cage . During the first lesson there was a terrible crash . The books and the ink were all on the floor , and Heidi was gone . Miss Rottenmeier found her at the front door . “ I heard the fir trees , ” said Heidi sadly . “ But I can’t hear them now . ” It was only the noise of the carriages in the street . “ Fir trees ! Are we in a forest ? ” cried Miss Rottenmeier . “ In lessons you sit still ! ” In the afternoon Heidi asked Sebastian , “ Where can I see far , over the whole valley ? ” “ From a high church tower , Miss . ” At once Heidi ran out of the house . A boy with a barrel organ on his back showed her the way to an old church , and she promised him twenty pennies . An old tower keeper took her up many stairs . But from the top she saw only a sea of roofs and chimneys . “ It isn’t what I thought , ” she said sadly . On the way down she saw a basket full of kittens . “ You can have them all , ” said the tower keeper . Heidi put two in her pockets , and he promised to bring the rest to Clara . At supper Miss Rottenmeier began , “ Adelheid , you left the house without asking . This is very bad behaviour . ” “ Miaow , ” came the answer . “ How dare you make jokes ! ” “ I’m not . . . ” began Heidi . “ Miaow ! Miaow ! ” “ Heidi , why do you keep saying miaow ? ” asked Clara . “ It isn’t me , it’s the kittens ! ” “ Kittens ? ” screamed Miss Rottenmeier . “ Sebastian ! Take the horrible animals away ! ” She was terribly afraid of cats . Sebastian laughed and laughed , and then he hid the kittens in the attic . The next morning the boy came to get his money . Sebastian let him in , and the boy played his barrel organ for Clara . Suddenly his pet tortoise crawled between Miss Rottenmeier’s feet , and she jumped higher than she had for years . Then the basket arrived , and a crowd of kittens ran all over the room . Clara laughed until she cried . Every afternoon Heidi told Clara about the Alm , and every time she became more homesick . Two white rolls lay by her plate every day , and she hid them all in her wardrobe for Granny . One day she could not bear it any longer . She wrapped the rolls in her red scarf , put on her straw hat and went down the stairs . At the door she met Miss Rottenmeier . “ Where are you going , dressed like a tramp ? ” “ I only want to go home . ” “ Run away ? Did you ever have such a room and such food in your life ? You are a very ungrateful child ! ”
