Her favourite story was about a young man who ran away from his father’s house . He spent all his money and had to look after pigs . At last he went home , sad and sorry , and his father ran to meet him with open arms . But Heidi’s merry eyes did not come back . In her last week Grandmamma asked , “ Do you still pray every day ? ” “ No . God didn’t listen . So many people pray in Frankfurt that he can’t hear them all . ” “ Oh , Heidi . God is like a good father . He knows what is good for us better than we do . Sometimes he doesn’t give us what we ask for at once , because he has something better for us later . But we must trust him and keep praying . ” “ I’ll ask him to forgive me , ” said Heidi . “ And I’ll never forget him again . ” Then Grandmamma went home . One day Heidi read Clara a story about a dying grandmother . “ Now Granny is dead ! ” she sobbed . “ Adelheid , if you cry like that again , I’ll take the book away for ever ! ” said Miss Rottenmeier . After that Heidi never cried aloud again . But she ate almost nothing , and she grew thinner and paler . She did not even know if it was summer or winter . The walls and windows always looked the same . IX . The Ghost Then something strange began to happen in the Sesemann house . Every morning the front door was standing wide open , but nothing was missing . The servants locked it and put a heavy bar across it . Still , every morning it was open again . One night Sebastian and John , the coachman , sat up to watch . At one o’clock John went out into the hall with a candle . A cold wind blew through the open door , and the light went out . He rushed back , shaking . “ There was a white figure on the stairs ! ” he said . Miss Rottenmeier wrote to Mr Sesemann that Clara was so frightened that she might become ill . Two days later he was home . He did not believe in ghosts , and he sent for his old friend , Doctor Classen . That night the two men waited downstairs with bright candles and two loaded pistols . At one o’clock they heard the key turn . They went out into the hall . Pale moonlight fell through the open door , and on the doorstep stood a small white figure . “ Who’s there ? ” shouted the doctor . It was Heidi , barefoot , in her white nightdress . She was staring at the lights and the pistols and shaking like a leaf . The doctor put down his pistol and took her gently up to bed . “ Where did you want to go ? ” he asked . “ Nowhere . I didn’t go down myself . I was just suddenly there . ” “ Do you dream at night ? ” “ Yes , every night the same dream . I’m with Grandfather , and I hear the fir trees outside . I think the stars are shining , and I run and open the door of the hut . But when I wake up , I’m still in Frankfurt . ” “ Does anything hurt you ? ” “ Only here . ” She put her hand on her chest . “ It feels like a big stone . ” “ As if you want to cry ? ”
