II . The Island That Was a Whale When my parents died , they left me a lot of money . I was young and foolish , and I spent most of it on parties and fine things . Then I remembered an old saying : it is a terrible thing to be old and poor . So I sold everything in my house and joined a group of traders . We bought a ship together at Basra , the great port south of Baghdad , and sailed towards the Indies . At every island we sold our goods or traded them for other goods . One day the wind stopped , and our ship could not move . Near us there was a small , flat , green island , only a little higher than the sea . The captain let us go onto it for a while . Some of us walked about , and then we made a fire and sat down to eat . Suddenly the island began to shake . The men on the ship shouted , “ Come back ! Quick ! It isn’t an island ! It’s a sleeping whale ! ” Some men jumped into the boat , and others swam . But before I could move , the whale went down under the water . I was holding a piece of wood for our fire , and I held on to it . Then a wind began to blow . The men on the ship were busy with the sails , and nobody saw that I was missing . The ship sailed away without me . All day and all night the waves carried me this way and that . I was sure that I was going to die . But in the morning the sea brought me to an island . I climbed up the rocks and lay on the grass , more dead than alive . Later I found some plants to eat and a spring of clean water . Then I began to walk round the island . After a while I saw a horse in a field . Suddenly a man came out from under the ground and asked me who I was . I told him my story . He said that he worked for Mihrage , the king of the island . Every year he and his friends brought the king’s horses here to eat the grass . He took me to his friends , and they gave me food . “ You are lucky , ” they told me . “ Tomorrow we are going back to the city . Without us , you would never find the way . ” The next day they took me to King Mihrage , and he was very kind to me . His city was by the sea . Every day I went to the port and looked for a ship that could take me home .
