One day a ship came into the port , and men began to carry bags off it . I saw my own name on some of them ! They were the goods that I had put on our ship at Basra . Then I saw the captain , too . I knew that he believed I was dead . So I went up to him and asked , “ Whose bags are these ? ” “ They belonged to a trader from Baghdad called Sinbad , ” he said . “ One day he went onto an island with some other men . But it wasn’t an island . It was a huge whale , and it went down into the sea . Poor Sinbad drowned . I want to sell his goods and give the money to his family . ” “ Captain , ” I said , “ I am that Sinbad ! I didn’t die , and these are my goods ! ” The captain became angry . “ Nobody is honest these days ! ” he cried . “ I saw Sinbad drown with my own eyes . And now you tell me a wicked lie to get goods that are not yours ! ” “ Please listen to my story , ” I said , and I told him everything . Then some other traders from the ship came up . They knew me at once , and at last the captain believed me , too . He threw his arms around me . “ Thank God that you are alive ! ” he cried . “ Here are your goods . Take them . ” I thanked him for his honesty and offered him a present , but he did not want anything . I took the finest of my goods to King Mihrage as a present . In return he gave me many valuable gifts . Then I said goodbye to him and sailed home on the same ship . On the way I bought and sold well , and I came back to Basra very rich . My family were overjoyed to see me . I built a big house and decided to forget all my troubles . Here Sinbad stopped . When the porter left , Sinbad gave him a hundred gold coins . “ Take this , Hindbad , ” he said . “ And come back tomorrow to hear more . ” When Hindbad came home with the money , his wife and children were very happy . The next day he put on his best clothes and went back . After the feast , Sinbad began again . III . The Roc and the Valley of Diamonds After my first voyage I wanted a quiet life in Baghdad . But soon I grew tired of doing nothing . So I bought goods and sailed with some honest traders that I knew . One day we stopped at an island with many fruit trees and streams , but with no houses and no people . The others went off to pick fruit . I sat down in the shade , ate some food and fell asleep . When I opened my eyes , I was alone . The ship was gone ! I ran up and down the beach , crying . Far away I saw the ship with all its sails up , and a moment later it disappeared . “ Why didn’t I stay at home ? ” I thought . But wishes could not help me . From the top of a tall tree I saw something big and white far away . I walked towards it . It was a huge white ball , very smooth and soft to touch . It was fifty steps round , and I could find no door in it .
