“ Don’t be angry , ” I said to them . “ I have enough diamonds for all of you . ” And I showed them my bag . When they saw my diamonds , they said , “ We have never seen stones so big and so fine . ” Each trader had his own nest . I asked the owner of my nest to take as many diamonds as he wanted . But he took only one , and not the biggest . “ With this stone I am rich , ” he said . “ I will never need to work again . ” I travelled home with the traders . On the way we visited an island where camphor trees grow . Camphor is white and has a strong smell , and people use it as a medicine . The trees were so big that a hundred men could sit in the shade of one of them . At last I came home to Baghdad with my diamonds . I gave a lot of money to the poor , and then I settled down to enjoy my riches . Again Sinbad gave Hindbad a hundred gold coins , and the next day the guests came back . The porter’s old life of hard work and hunger was already beginning to seem like a bad dream . After the feast , Sinbad began the story of his third voyage . IV . The Giant with One Eye My easy life soon made me forget the dangers of my first two voyages . I was still young and strong , so I went to sea again with other traders . But one day a terrible storm caught us . It blew for many days and drove us to a strange island . “ I would stop anywhere in the world but here ! ” said our captain . “ The people on these islands are small , but there are thousands of them . If we kill even one of them , the others will kill us all . ” Soon we saw that he was right . A great crowd of little people came towards us . They were no taller than small children , and they had red hair all over their bodies . They swam out to our ship and climbed up its sides very fast . We did not dare to stop them . They took the ship to another island nearby and made us all go onto the beach . Then they sailed away with our ship . We walked away from the sea and came to a tall , strong castle . We pushed open its heavy black doors and went in . But at the door of the great hall we stopped , cold with fear . On one side of the hall there was a big pile of bones . On the other side there were long iron sticks for cooking meat over a fire . When the sun was going down , the door opened and a terrible giant came in . He was as tall as a palm tree , and he had only one eye , in the middle of his forehead . It shone like a burning coal . His teeth were long and sharp , and his nails were like a bird’s claws .
